There is both uncertainty and opportunity with regard to using social media to power your pedagogy.

As an educator you have an array of options from which to choose: blogs, Facebook, Google, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, and many others.

Each of these interactive options can enhance engagement and increase interaction in your classes. But having a tool and knowing how to use it are different experiences altogether.

I had an opportunity to explore this during a presentation I delivered on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the 2105 GESS Global Education Forum in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Sharing seven strategies for curating and creating curriculum I promoted best practices and case studies you can use to prepare your pedagogy, socially.

Social media has revolutionized the way we live, but how can we leverage it for learning?

In 2013 59.2% of nearly 8,000 higher education participants in a Babson Survey Research Group and Pearson survey agreed “the interactive nature of online and mobile technologies can create better learning environments.” Additionally, 41% currently use social media in their classrooms. However, 56% of that same population are concerned that online and mobile technologies are “more distracting than helpful to students.”

Given this dynamic, there exists both uncertainty and opportunity with regard to using social media to power your pedagogy. You have an array of options from which to choose: blogs, Facebook, Google, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and YouTube (and many others) can enhance engagement and increase interaction in your classes. But having a tool and knowing how to use it are different experiences altogether.

Introduction

Guided by the motto “learn continuously, live generatively” I nurture a student-centered learning environment as a Lecturer in the College of Business Administration at Jumeira University in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I have additional experience as an adjunct instructor, corporate trainer, and instructional designer bolstered by my background as a writer, marketer, and speaker.

At Jumeira University I teach business courses to male and female undergraduate students on campus in a unique single-gender environment, designing curriculum aligned with the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research standards. Focused on nurturing a student-centered learning environment, I remain focused on knowledge advancement by engaging students with practical coursework and assessments while inspiring them towards lifelong learning.

As an adjunct instructor I have taught business, communication, and computer application courses for Antioch University, National University, UCLA Extension, UC Santa Barbara Extension and other academic institutions. In corporate settings I have conducted business writing, communication, and decision making seminars. As an instructional designer I create courses delivered on campus and online with learning management systems including Blackboard, Canvas, eCollege, edX, Moodle, and Sakai.

A lifelong writer, I have authored scholarly papers, feature articles, and Doctorious, a blog about my adventures with adjunctivitis – along with “EdX E-Learning Course Development,” a book for educators creating courses with the edX learning management system.  With more than a dozen years of experience as a marketer and consultant, I have managed people, products, and projects in the healthcare, non-profit, and technology segments. A charismatic speaker I connect with audiences using sincerity and storytelling.

Educationally, I earned an MBA from Woodbury University and a Bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing from UC Santa Barbara, where I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. I also completed coursework in an organizational leadership doctoral program at Pepperdine University.

Raised near San Francisco, but born in Boston, I am a Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox fan. Fascinated with flight, I’ve had a lifelong love of aviation, science fiction, and comic book superheroes — especially Superman. When I am earthbound you can find me living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
