#PlatinumEngineer complete. This is one of my favorite new badges... takes a lot of time and effort to achieve unlike some of the new cream puff badges released lately. Many thanks to my teammates for donations and trades. Couldn't have done it without you... Now for the long haul to black!

WOW!

China assembles world's largest radio telescope ... hat tip to +Bobby Coggins for finding this ... "Technicians have begun assembling the world's largest radio telescope, with a dish the size of 30 football grounds, deep in the mountains of southwest China's Guizhou Province.

Yesterday afternoon, they began to assemble the telescope's reflector, which is 500 meters in diameter and made up of 4,450 panels. Each panel is an equilateral triangle with sides 11 meters long.

Once complete, the single-aperture spherical telescope called FAST will be the world's largest, exceeding the one at Puerto Rico's Arecibo Observatory, which is 300 meters in diameter.

Nan Rendong, chief scientist of the FAST project with the National Astronomical Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences, told reporters the bigger dish will be able to pick up weaker signals.
"A radio telescope is like a sensitive ear, listening to tell meaningful radio messages from white noise in the universe. It is like identifying the sound of cicadas in a thunderstorm," he said.

The giant dish is being built on a naturally formed bowl-like valley. "There are three hills about 500 meters away from one another, creating a valley that is perfect to support the telescope," said Sun Caihong, FAST's chief engineer.

The karst formation in the local landscape is good for draining rainwater underground and protecting the reflector, Sun said.
The surrounding area has "radio silence" as there are no towns and cities within a 5-kilometer radius and only one county center within 25 kilometers.

The huge dish is hung over the ground supported by thousands of steel pillars and cables.

A hill-top observation platform is under construction and will be open to the public, Sun said.

Wu Xiangping, director-general of the Chinese Astronomical Society, said that for years scientists had to work with "second hand" data collected by others.

"Having a more sensitive telescope, we can receive weaker and more distant radio messages. It will help us to search for intelligent life outside of the galaxy and explore the origins of the universe," Wu said.

Crossed another BLACK badge off my #Ingress#BucketList last night. The liberator badge is what got me to level 16 just over a year ago. It blows my mind when I see agents roll through an area and leave portals grey. DOH! This is one of the easiest badges to obtain... just hit deploy and cap your kills!

Great work to the all Enlightened out there that shut down a blue field over Dallas and Austin. Especially those that drove till 5 am to keep it blocked.

Unlike certain Houston agents that give Barcodes a bad name and deny the existence of blocked fields, we'll freely admit it was blocked. Nice work.

APOD: 2015 July 27 - Milky Way and Aurora over Antarctica

It has been one of the better skies of this long night. In parts of Antarctica, not only is it winter, but the Sun can spend weeks below the horizon. At China's Zhongshan Station, people sometimes venture out into the cold to photograph a spectacular night sky. The featured image from one such outing was taken in mid-July, just before the end of this polar night.

+Weasel thats the way to do it. I work my Soldiers up that way. Stay with the 5 miles adding 3-5 lbs, trying to maintain the same time or faster. When you can at least maintain the same time with 25-30lbs, then increase distance. 5 miles is a good distance to start out. Invest in mole skin and take care of blisters and "hot spots" on your feet.

The most intense ruck march I ever did was 25 miles with an 80lb ruck in under 9 hours. I will never do it again. It was back in my younger years when I did ruck marches often. Both of the entire bottoms of my feet were almost all blister lol.

Let me know if you need any tips.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS... Unless you enjoy over smoked, dry BBQ. 2 separate visits yielded the same results. (actually the 2nd visit was even worse) The meat was so over smoked it gave me reflux all night and I was still burping smoke flavored taste the following morning. I'll never make the mistake of going here again. You can get much better BBQ elsewhere in Grapevine.
