This is long in exposition, but it does discuss things in an interesting way.
What caused the worst American rail disaster in decades?

Hmm, that is written terribly long! And it seems premature: "In the first week of February, the N.T.S.B. will release the “docket” from the 188 investigation — a voluminous preliminary report comprising raw data from the train’s black box, imagery from the site and notes from investigators. Its ruling on the probable cause of the accident will most likely come this spring."
A possible positive outcome: """“My hope,” Feinberg told me recently, “is that the derailment was our long-overdue wake-up call that we need P.T.C. — that we owe it to passengers and rail staff to have it online.”"""

This week we static fired the upgraded Falcon 9’s first stage for a planned 15 second test. This was the first test of the upgraded first stage with densified propellant, and we’ve now static fired both stages of the upgraded Falcon 9.

This was also the first time we utilized our new Falcon Booster Test Stand at our facilities in McGregor, TX.

I get a massive discount on a lease if I want one, and I would STILL pay $600/mo!

Met a legend, got an autograph, and wrote a blog about how Iron Man inspires me to be a better sysadmin. Not bad for a day's work.
I love meeting people at SysAdmin events. Having a blog that people reads does mean that people have mostly heard all of my best stories, but it's still fun getting to know new people and hearing what they've been working on. The single thing I hear most often is a question, and the question is, ...

I'm so glad I paid money to help do this. Can't wait.

This is an outstanding review of an incident in Massachusetts that should never have happened. The "Normalization of Deviance" is related to the the "Drift Into Failure".
The NTSB report on the Bedford G-IV crash has been released, and “pilot error” doesn’t even begin to describe it. How do respected, well-trained, experienced pilots screw up so b…

Why don't they routinely and continuously analyze the data recorder and voice recorder to look for anomalies across all flights? We should be finding and removing the lazy pilots and complacent crews long before an accident makes it obvious.

This is what I did when I got to watch the Orion EFT launch. You should do it to! NASA is awesome!

We’re hosting a #NASASocial on Dec. 3 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Apply to attend and witness a cargo launch to the International Space Station! More information: http://go.nasa.gov/1WbdAee

+Matt Simmons and I share a passion for space, and when he told me that he followed up on that initial conversation at LISA and was interviewing at SpaceX, I was over the moon (hah) happy for him. When he told me he was actually getting an offer, I whooped and danced around, startling the person sitting next to me.

And now he's made an official blog post announcing that he's moving to LA and going to work for one of the most amazing companies in the world. I can finally share my happiness and excitement for him with everyone else, too.

Congratulations, Matt, you are embarking on a most excellent journey!
I really like working at Northeastern University, which is why I'm sad that I'm going to be leaving. On the other hand, life occasionally presents an opportunity to you that can't ignore. This is one of those occasions. A few months ago, I was sitting in a small room full of sysadmins planning ...

Good luck to Planetary Resources (and all of the other entrants to the market)! This is an exciting time!

Introduction
I was an IT administrator for various small companies for 11 years+. I took a while off, but I'm back in the game and working at Northeastern University with a great team of admins.

I enjoy traveling, sailing, photography, and writing. I have a blog that I keep, Standalone Sysadmin, and I'm involved in LOPSA.

Feel free to drop me a line on twitter (@standaloneSA) or add me to a circle.

This was the first time in a long time that I had a really great dealer experience. Everyone at the dealership was terrific. The service I had done was expensive (airbag replacement), but their price was fair, given what they had to do. The free rides to and from the train station were great, as well. The drivers are very friendly folks. I will definitely be back when I need service done that I don't feel comfortable doing myself.

As mentioned, beds are comfortable. Although there are "no smoking" signs everywhere, the entire floor smells like old smoke. Not cool.

Microcenter is THE place to go buy computer hardware if you can't wait on it to be delivered...and even if you can, check there first and support the local business.

This definitely isn't the best Indian restaurant I've been to, but the food is surprisingly good. When I walked in, I nearly walked out, just from the looks of the buffet's layout (it's small and there aren't many choices at all, plus it wasn't a busy restaurant), but I stuck it out and tried it. The food is really good! The style is very much Punjab, with a lot of heavy cream and the buttery/nutty taste from ghee, but it was tasty. Not a lot of vegetarian dishes (I think there may have been 2?), and the naan was a bit tough, but they brought out more right after I got mine, so it might have been sitting there for a while. Overall, I wish this restaurant was more frequented at lunch so there would be more turnover on the buffet, but even as it was at 12:30, the food was very good, and the best indian I've had in the Bethel / Dublin area.
