The punishment seems grossly disproportionate. Wow.

He thought he had a contact who had the means to kill people on command, and he commanded it six times.  10 years each at the maximum for that one and its already at life I think.

Just my luck.  On the TGV to Paris from Zürich, and the TGV breaks down immediately once we cross the border from CH into F (and I mean a stone's throw across the border).

Well shit.  Kudos on whoever gets royalties on sprintf, Factory, Singleton, *Module, or *Provider.

If that would happen, that would be so amazing. Of course no one (except the positively crazy) would plan to hike 10k miles en bloc around the Great Lakes, given the winters, but imagine this... it's about a year non-stop, every day, with reasonably low altitude changes and mostly well developed paths. It could be the gateway drug for those thinking about AT or even PCT, finding out if you can do 3k miles and still want to do the same in more adverse terrain.
The Great Lakes Trail would span at least eight states and two Canadian provinces, and would be the longest continuous marked trail in the world .

We all knew Slashdot has been dead for years.  The question is what the fuck is Hot Topic going to do with its dehydrated corpse?

New neighbors are always nice, albeit in Genève.

Not surprising at all. But a PR loss for the US of A, anyhow. I met Phil twice (2003? and 2013?), and he was at both times an interesting interview partner. I wonder what his business is doing. Any news on that?
“Every dystopian society has excessive surveillance, but now we see even western democracies like the US and England moving that way,” he warns. “We have to roll this back. People who are not suspected of committing crimes should not have information collected and stored in a database. We don’t want to become like North Korea.”
The brains behind PGP has moved his mobile-encryption firm Silent Circle to Switzerland to be free of US mass surveillance

Staumauer-Sihlsee: I reckon the lake is 20 meters higher than the subsequent river past the dam. A break in this, and a huge fraction of Zürich along the Sihl and Limmat (out to Werdinsel, even) would be a meter under water within a few hours.

There's also the refreshing message from authorities in San Francisco: In the event of a major earthquake you'll be on your own for 48 hours. We're prepared to help you but you need to be ready to help us help you. Not sure if anyone listened, but when I lived there I had a cache that would have lasted my neighbors and me 4 days.
