Anyone playing 5E #dnd look at alternative skill systems?

I kind of want something closer to AD&D's non-weapon proficiencies where the goal is to roll under a PCs stat. The roll under your stat almost works except it removes the leveling proficiency bonus and PC stats can get to 20 fairly easily.

I've been thinking about something like roll 3d6 for a task, 4d6 for a hard task, 5d6 for an epic task, and 6d6 for an impossible task. However, I haven't paid much attention to what it does for bell curves of success for PCs with an 18 or 20 stat. I also haven't figured out how to incorporate proficiency bonus increasing as PCs level.

The multiple d6 is one of the take-aways I had from another (Khortalis Publishing) "The Islands of Purple-Haunted Putrescence".

Once again if anyone has thoughts, opinions, or articles I'd be happy to hear them.

+Matt Maranda  I'm not following your first paragraph. What's the dice rolled, what's the target number, resolution method, stat of said first level PC?

But if you're looking to increase/maintain the risk/tension of rolls then isn't XdY inherently self-defeating? The more dice you roll, the less likely you make outliers. Which means you stick closer to averages and if players rarely see non-average results then, well, they're gonna start assuming the average.

I collaborated on the monsters in this concept work as well. Take a look at it and feel free to leave a review or direct feedback to me.

Hey, everyone! This new pay-what-you-want PDF on DriveThru has a pretty cool concept: a themed group of monsters. (Full disclosure: I helped write it.) Anyway, it includes a swamp witch who has enthralled a group of lizardfolk, and the lizardfolk tribe that wants revenge. The 9-page book  includes 4 creatures statted out for D&D 5E, 2 variants, 4 adventure hooks, and 4 adventure scenarios. Oh, and the download includes Kindle, Nook, and iPad formats, too.

With the news of 5E releasing web-content for the Eberron Campaign. I started thinking What if warforged was something one chose to become. To give up one's humanity for ageless service? Almost re-envisioning them as the Fighter's alternative to becoming a lich. Ageless life with no weakening of the body or will/resolve. Of course many would almost certainly go mad since they would loose the release of drink and other carnal activities. Others knowing that they could likely be repaired would loose the drive that carried them to be the great warriors they had been before electing this path.

Mechanically it might be something as simple as providing options that override the class/path options an provide news ones. Mayb even retroactively replacing previous abilities.
Welcome to the first installment of Unearthed Arcana, a monthly workshop where D&D R&D shows off a variety of new and interesting pieces of RPG design for use at your gaming table. You can think of the material presented in this series as similar to the first wave of the fifth edition playtest.

Didn't 3.5 have a prestige class for artificers where they basically did cybernetic replacements of parts?

Fantasy in the Blasted Future
I wrote up some ideas about what kinds of places and cultures might survive and repeat in a fantasy campaign world that takes place in the blasted future of the earth. Yes I was inspired by Thundarr the Barbarian.
In my last post I talked about setting a "Lamentations of the Flame Princess" game in the future after a catastrophic event. But my description did not go into any detail about what cultures and nations might look like in tha...

Tom called me back within a half hour of doing the job and realized where there was a miscommunication. He will be coming by to finish the job. I will update again when/if the job is done correctly. Initial Review: One Star Tom was prompt but very disorganized. In addition his poor English resulted in me paying way too much money to have him cut a pipe and put a cap on it. A job that took less than 10 minutes.
