People, this year’s Top Ten Cutest Photos list blows 2010 and 2009 AWAY—see for yourselfs. This morning, we checked the Xtreme Cute Overload Stat-o-Meter™ which tracks every post, checks the amount of screeching per image, and reports back. Then we know we got ya. Based on that metering system, and without further ado, here are the Top Ten Photos of 2011. Cue the Cute Lang Syne music! #10 Cutest Photo of 2011: Goosey Two Shoes Just when we though...

The cognitive science journal Cortex has just released a special issue on the neuropsychology of paranormal experiences and belief, and contains a fantastic article on hallucinations induced by the Ganzfeld procedure. The Ganzfeld procedure exposes the participant to ‘unstructured’ sensations usually by placing half ping-pong balls over the eyes so they can only see diffuse white light and by playing white noise through headphones. It is probably...

I miss Hypercard
theodp writes "Steve Jobs took the secret to his grave, but Stanislav Datskovskiy offers some interesting and illustrated speculation on why HyperCard had to die. 'Jobs was almost certainly familiar with HyperCard and its capabilities,' writes Datskovskiy. 'And he killed it anyway. Wouldn't you love to know why? Here's a clue: Apple never again brought to market anything resembling HyperCard. Despite frequent calls to do so. Despite a more-or-les...

Meara O'Reilly says: Open Source Ecology is a network of farmers, engineers, and supporters building the Global Village Construction Set -- a modular, DIY, low-cost, open source, high-performance platform that allows for the easy fabrication of the 50 different industrial machines that it takes to build a small, sustainable civilization with modern comforts. They've launched a Kickstarter here. The founder, Marcin Jakubowski, PhD, has a TED ta...

Brain games will make you smarter! The internet is making you dumber! Alcohol is killing your brain cells! The brain is a mystery we've been trying to solve for ages, and the desire to unlock its secrets has led to vast amounts of misinformation. Many of these false notions are more widely believed than the truth. We took our healthy skepticism and a bunch of brain research to find the truth behind some of the most common myths about intelligence...

Two of us had dinner on a rainy Saturday. Got a table next to the kitchen, but it didn't matter; food was great, staff were great, atmosphere was great.

Stayed here one night en route to Australia. Was conveniently located close to airport. Made the terrible decision to dine in the restaurant; 5-star prices, Cobb and Co quality food. Neither of us bothered half finishing or meals. They offered us free desserts but the evening had lost its mojo. Retreating to our room we struggled to sleep as it was so dry; windows don't open, and they pump in that fake air. The whole place was very presentable and tidy. Overall, not bad, but not great either.

The staff in the cafe/bar were really friendly and the atmosphere was great. The restaurant's food and decor were mediocre to poor, and the male maître d’ charged us for things we didn't order (and refused to take them off the bill).
