Shooting Sunset at McWay Falls

A while back I visited the Big Sur area along the California coast. One of the places I've always wanted to visit there was McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. It just always looked like such a great place with the water falling on to the beach, and the sun setting off to the right.

Anyone who's been to the area knows that there's often a lot of fog, so getting the shot is by no means a gimmee, even if you do get there. But I got lucky that evening and had a great sunset. That along with some nice +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and +onOne Software finishing, gave the shot here.

I posted more details about the getting the shot, post-processing, camera settings, etc... over on my blog: http://mattyk.me/1pyMBtX

What do sprained ankles, long drives, and exploding water all have in common with photography?

...My trip to Thor's Well in Oregon. Last month I had the chance to visit Thor's Well with my buddies +Brian Matiash, +Rick LePage, and +Hudson Henry. It's a place I've been to before, but never ended up with the shot I wanted. This time though, we timed things perfectly. Aside from 6 hours of driving and a sprained ankle to go along with it, Thor's Well was an awesome place to see with the water constantly erupting out of it.

I wrote a more in-depth story about getting there and shooting over on my blog if you want to check it out: http://mattyk.me/SUvbwR

The Grid Live - Coming in just under 2 hours

Yes, what RC said below (less all of the complicated words that I don't know) ;-)

*The Preocupation with 'Professional' *
Tomorrow I will be joining +Matt Kloskowski  on The Grid Live at 4PM.  The topic of the conversation? "The Preocupation with 'Professional' "

There are so many things that float around in photography around the word "Professional"  - Amateur photographers look to put professional in their lexicon. Countless of people debate what 'makes' a professional photographer. Professional photographers lament 'non professionals' jumping into the market.  The word Amateur is often seen as a pejorative work.  We'll explore this topic - and welcome your comments, tomorrow at 4PM LIVE :  http://kelbyone.com/thegrid

Here's a photo from last night at Honeymoon Island in Dunedin, FL. You gotta love Florida weather. At 7pm, it looked like it may be a nice dramatic sky sunset. At 7:30, it was looking like it would be totally clear. There were some clouds in the distance, but they looked too far to make it. At 8pm, I thought it was going to be storming way too bad to stay out there. Crazy huh? But luckily, the weather stayed off to the south and it turned out really nice.

Taken with a Canon 5D Mark III, 24-70mm lens, Aperture: f/11, Shutter Speed: 25 sec, Lee Little Stopper 6-stop ND filter. Processed with +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and onOne Software.
And there's a little more about the story and details over on my blog:http://mattyk.me/1m96WqP

Awesome photo +Kelly DeLay. I think there's an exception to the train track rule, that with clouds like this in your photo, you can include them ;-)

The back edge of this supercell outside of Dalhart, Texas had beautiful mammatus clouds. Yes, I broke one of Scott Kelby's rule of having train tracks in the foreground, but I could not help myself :)  With my buddies +Mike Mezeul, +Toby Harriman and +Michael Shainblum.

If I Had $1,000-ish To Spend on Improving My Landscape Photography, I’d Get…

Today I wrote a guest post over on +Scott Kelby's blog about where I'd spend my money to improve my landscape photography. It was a great teaching lesson for me to write, because I really tried to keep in the spirit of listing things that could help "improve" your landscape photography, rather than me just going through all of the gear I had in my bag.

If you're just starting out in shooting landscapes and outdoors, I hope you'll go check it out: http://mattyk.me/1h5o7sE

Also, my landscape photographer buddy +Bill Fortney wrote a follow up to it with some neat things as well:http://billfortney.com/?p=10607

If there's one thing I look for when I'm out shooting landscapes and outdoor photos, it's a great sky. I definitely think +Karen Hutton found one here. WOW!

Like a Breath... Truckee, California
Like a breath, it was.
Like the first big, steamy, hot breath of morning... or the last one at the end of long, debauched night.
Not one you'd want to take in with both nostrils.
Or even part of one.

Does Your Technical Side Get the Best of Your Photography?

Hey everyone. I just posted an interesting thought on whether or not our technical sides get in the way (over on my blog: http://mattyk.me/RRw7BP). I know it does for me sometimes. The blog post actually came from a post I did here on G+ yesterday, where I inadvertently started another Photoshop/Photography editing ethics discussion. I realize the way I wrote the post, it sounded like that but I really wasn't trying to go that way with it. I agree, that discussion is indeed old and tired. The post I wrote over on my blog, will hopefully help clarify a bit and maybe even change the way you look at your (or others) photos.

Here's the link: http://mattyk.me/RRw7BP

Thanks and sorry for starting another tired debate yesterday :-)
I just noticed a really interesting photo/topic over on 500px yesterday. The photo there, made it up to #1 on the site yesterday. My initial thought was WOW! Looks kinda like an illustration but still cool. Then I clicked on it and still thought it was cool, but could see some obvious Photoshop ...

I like the blog post +Matt Kloskowski. Validating it's okay to be artsy!  My experience is the same, had a photo of Delicate Arch that went to #3 on 500px and I was having a hard time looking at it myself recently. But people LOVE it!  Thanks for your thoughts.
