True Link offers a Visa debit card that protects seniors from scams

If you take care of a parent or grandparent and want to protect them from common scams, click to read about True Link below. They provide a debit card with a lot of additional smarts built-in.

For example, you can block purchases online or over the phone--one of the most common ways of exploiting seniors--while allowing in-person purchases. You can also set spending limits or per-purchase spending limits. And you can configure alerts for purchases, plus True Link is building up a database of scammers.

I'm an investor in True Link for a couple reasons. First, there are a lot of people currently taking care of other people, and a safer debit card can help protect against scams. But the bigger reason is that True Link has figured out how to inject programmatic smarts into the debit card space. If you can approve or deny individual purchases based on additional information, that has a ton of potential.

If you're taking care of a senior or know someone else who is, check out True Link at https://www.truelinkcard.com/ .
Sweepstakes scams, hidden charges, unwanted subscriptions and much more. The True Link Prepaid Visa® Card keeps watch, so you don't have to.

You need to read Michael Lewis' new book, Flash Boys. It's about Wall Street and computerized trading, but that description doesn't do it justice. The story is gripping, and it's not about some long-past threat to society. Lewis writes about events up to December 2013, just a few short months ago. There's a battle worth billions of dollars going on right now, you should know about it, and Michael Lewis makes it clear and fascinating. Flash Boys is the best book I've read so far this year.

Interesting. The Garmin 620 running/GPS watch can sync via wifi or Bluetooth Smart (low energy). Android support is just walking in the door: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.garmin.android.apps.connectmobile (although only some devices aren't supported right now).

The 620 also supports wifi syncing, which removes yet another reason to keep a Mac/Windows desktop computer around. It used to be that you'd keep Windows around for Office, games, or because it supported a certain peripheral. Windows becomes less essential in a world with Google Docs, Steam machines, and devices that support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or wifi directly, like wireless printers or scanners. Even my Fitbit can sync directly to my Moto X now, so I could probably squeak by without a desktop PC at this point.

Rachel Searles, a colleague at Google, just published a new young adult novel. It's a fun, fast-paced sci-fi romp: a boy named Chase wakes up with no memory on a strange planet. I won't go into spoilers, but if you've got kids who are ready for sci-fi, I think they'd enjoy it. I enjoyed it myself, even though I'm not officially a young adult any more. :)

In 10 days, I'll be running the Boston Marathon to raise money for cancer research. Join me with a donation for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute! I'd love to raise $26,200, and so far we're at $25,000.

If you haven't tried Google Public DNS, it's really fast and has great uptime. You just set your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Give it a try!

I don't post SEO/search/webmaster videos here very often, because this is my personal G+ account, but this is an in-depth (8 minute!) video that explains some of the criteria we use when we decide whether a link is paid or not. Roughly, here are some of the important questions we ask:
- What is the value of the gift, product, or service?
- How close is the gift, product, or service to actual money?
- Is it an outright gift or a loan?
- Who is the intended audience?
- Is the intent of the gift to get links?
- Would the gift be a surprise to third party?

My guess is that anyone who has been involved with SEO for a while would intuitively understand these criteria, but it's helpful to clarify some of the questions we ask. Bear in mind that well over 99% of the time, paid links that pass PageRank are abundantly clear--because actual money is changing hands--plus we reserve the right to adapt our criteria when we see new types of spam or abuse.

When I did some SEO 6-10 years ago it was very easy to make big traffic with no cash at all. There was no need to pay for links. And now? Let's say you sell Adidas & Nike shoes and you have 20 competitors in the same town. What UNIQUE you can do on your website to attract Google? No kidding. Nothing. So the only way is pay for links... or pay for SEO services... no matter how we name it, the customer have to pay. And in fact the reason that Google doesn't like when someone pay for links to the 3rd parties is that according to their business they rather would like people to pay for Adwords. I don't know why most people do not see the connexion. So what this is all about??? :P

I'm the head of the webspam team at Google. That means that if you type your name into Google and get porn back, it's my fault. Unless you're a porn star, in which case porn is a completely reasonable response.

Very good food. Pretty fast for an upscale restaurant. Can get crowded/loud, so consider doing takeout. Especially good: BBQ ribs, the French dip sandwich.

A nice cafe with a friendly owner. I got a muffin and a water and camped. I heard Nina greeting people--she clearly knows many of her visitors. Free wifi and when I visited on Sunday, several different newspapers (including the Wall St Journal) set out for free browsing.

The lady who runs this bagel shop is fast and competent. If you come in regularly, she'll remember your order and your name. A nice place to grab bagels on the weekend.
