We've launched our latest feature: Guides! Guides are curated lists of events, created by members of our community. You can track guides to add their events to your calendar, or create a guide of your own.

Here are a few example guides created by our beta testers:

* http://lanyrd.com/guides/ux-conferences/ - Leisa Reichelt's guide to UX conferences
* http://lanyrd.com/guides/big-data/ - Matt Biddulph's guide to Big Data events
* http://lanyrd.com/guides/silicon-roundabout/ - a group guide to startup events in and around London's Silicon Roundabout
If you create a guide, you can either keep it protected so that only you can add events and edit it. Or you can create a public guide that anyone can join to help you curate it. Anyone can 'track&...

A jetlagged first evening back in Berlin gave me some time to play with Storm, Twitter's library for datastream processing. Without too much fuss I was able to build a Scala processing pipeline that tracks the Twitter sample-firehose, counts occurrences of pairs of words (2-shingles) using a Lucene tokenizer, and keeps live running totals updated in a Redis database.

Results: https://gist.github.com/1244665 and source: https://github.com/mattb/Storm-Try/
Its architecture makes a lot of sense and I can see how it makes all kinds of nice composable data components possible (and easy to share as open-source because of the clean interface).

After I published my SXSW panel visualisation, +Adam Greenfield asked on Twitter about the gender distribution of the proposers: https://twitter.com/#!/agpublic/status/104584817500364800

Using name-popularity data from the 1990 US census - e.g. http://www.census.gov/genealogy/names/dist.male.first - I made an estimate of the gender of each panel organiser.

277 names weren't recognized, but 1686 matched and the split was:

44% Female / 56% Male

The ruby code I used, in case anyone wants to verify my logic: https://gist.github.com/1163499

UPDATE: A Google spreadsheet of the raw data: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnL_jCvDcR35dDFLdjZCZnNFOUtyamZKNDJSR243bFE&hl=en_US

I've been tinkering with tracking the @replies from people I follow on Twitter to people I don't follow - the ones that are hidden from the timeline. Visualising them shows the clusters of people who are having conversations with each other that I can't see.
