Bitcoin does indeed raise the interesting question, how does one protect a $1 000 000 file as a single person or corporation? Cold storage, paper wallets, 2FA and long high-entropy passwords but it still seems a bit hairy. I believe the situation regarding theft will become worse before it becomes better and I expect highly ingenious btc-malware, phishing methods etc to evolve during the next five years as well as countermeasures. MtGox is only the beginning imho.
I think this is the fundamental weakness of cryptocurrencies. With regular currencies, governments use their power to make sure that someone can't steal millions from your bank account (or if they do, that the charge gets reversed). But why should they do the same with cryptocurrencies- and could they even do that, technically?
