About security...

I recently have read this in a comment on a forum:

The problem isn't passwords. The problem is people - people writing website code that makes it fairly trivial to get the list of people's passwords, and the people who fall for the social engineering tricks that means they give their password to someone they shouldn't.

It's like the programmers who work to get the computer to make better guesses at what people mean, instead of what they say - instead of society as a whole working to get people to actually mean what they say so that decent communication can take place.

Dance the Type-Fu Dance :-)
Everybody was type-fu fighting Compiling fast as lightning In fact it was a little bit frightening But their code had early binding They were funky ML men from funky CAML town They were chopping classes up and they were chopping classes down It's the ancient Curry's art, in Haskell but not Dart ...

Truly heartbreaking, and truly true...
So much treasure, so much waste. Italy is a cautionary tale of problems unfixed and pessimism unredeemed.

EPIC FAIL!
This is at the same time shameful and funny.
Unfortunately the idiocy of it wipes out the fun...
All right. It's Saturday night, I have no date, a two-liter bottle of Shasta and my all-Rush mix-tape...let's hack. On a whim I downloaded firmware v1.13 for

Really nice walk-through. Now I know what to do when I get my M-Net router - install my own firmware.

SCARY!!!
On the other hand, I want it: lately I have been flying almost every week, and when the flight is late it could be handy to take control and fix the route ;-)

First golden rule of out-sourcing:

You can only manage what you understand and have done yourself before

XYZ clearly outsourced without having a clue about what they were buying.
XYZ didn't know how to specify what they put out for bid.
XYZ didn't know how to evaluate what was proposed.
XYZ didn't know how to accept what was delivered.
XYZ clearly still doesn't know how to manage what was delivered/outsourced.

To be fair, being able to assess the quality of the result (while still not being able to do it yourself) is "almost enough": it will save you from using the deliverable you outsourced but you will still have wasted time and money...

(to give credit where credit is due, this quote comes from a comment in reddit in the discussion showed by this link)

Software Engineer, always waiting to have some time for kitesurfing...
Introduction
Software Engineer with a strong interest in programming language expressiveness and mostly working on JIT compilers.

I have an addiction to board sports: if it's a board that slides I want to be on it!
This includes snowboarding, kitesurfing, landkiting, snowkiting, and longboards as an urban transportation device (which I use daily).
Bragging rights
Still extra-happy after 15 years of marriage and one fantastic kid!
