I took a break to read a bit of Philip Pullman's new Grimm fairy tale book (which, full disclosure, was given to me by the publisher) and wow. It's a good book, btw. Straightforward telling of the stories - sometimes versions that aren't as popular, and a lot of historical background and context.

Turns out that Rapunzel was originally not lettuce but parsley - a known abortifacient. That totally sheds new light on why the woman swore she'd die if she didn't have some and why the husband was more than willing to give up the baby to the witch who owned the garden.
