Ester, Ikie, and Estephanie, three college students interviewed Singh at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore, Maryland, July 24, 2017. The students all overcame obstacles to make it into college, and they shared their experiences as well as leading a conversation with Singh about her life story and experiences. http://ow.ly/i/x3eDS http://ow.ly/i/x3eER http://ow.ly/i/x3eFP http://ow.ly/i/x3eH4 http://ow.ly/i/x3eIf http://ow.ly/i/x3eIW

The Maryland National Guard held a groundbreaking ceremony for the state and federally funded $17.3 million renovation of the BG (MD) Lewis G. Smith, Armory in Easton, Maryland, on June 2, 2017.

Maj. Gen. Linda L. Singh, the adjutant general of Maryland, hosted the ceremony. The renovation will replace the facility that was built in 1974 and will provide 37,000 square feet of new space for more than 150 soldiers.

“This facility will give them the opportunity to operate at the highest levels in terms of technical capacity,” said Singh. “When we decide to build a new facility, we must consider the location, the unit’s mission, and our ability to support our state mission. Renovating this facility has been a top priority. I am very pleased and I know I will be very proud once the renovation is complete.”

The new Easton Readiness Center will continue to be the home of soldiers assigned to D Co., 1st Bn., 175th Inf. Regt. and Det. 1, 729th Composite Supply Co., and a team from the Honor Guard. During the renovation, the soldiers are temporarily assigned to the Queen Anne’s Armory. The renovation should be completed in 18 to 24 months.

The Maryland Department of General Services is responsible for contract execution and administration. Harkins Builders, Inc. of Columbia, Maryland, will construct the facility, with Stantec, as the principal architect and design-build partner.

The new building will sit on the existing 12-acre site at 7111 Ocean Gateway and will include: administrative office suites, an assembly hall, classrooms and a multi-purpose training/simulation room, equipment supply areas, kitchen and break room, a detached vehicle maintenance building, a fitness and locker room, and honor guard administrative offices.
