Thank god for that..... The UK mad cow disease flowed by the foot and mouth outbreak turned me hard vegetarian for years.. If I'd thought this was real I'd have gone that way again. 
Umm...yeah, but the point is still pretty true: cows lives are cut short by red meat, right?
Wouldn't surprise me in the least - but who has the budget to feed steak to cows?

Cows have a normal lifespan. What you are eating are usually heifers and steers, sometimes young bulls also. A rancher keeps the cows. They don't taste very good anyway, but you've probably had some tough hamburger? Yep, that was it...old cow or more often an old dairy cow.
Well, maybe I don't understand the definition then--if you are eating heifers isn't that exactly what the claim is?
There's a distinction among producers, a cow is an animal that has given birth to a calf. Usually around two years, although they can breed earlier, that is usually not desirable. Hormonal changes when a heifer gets pregnant cause changes in the flavor and texture of the meat.
So if a heifer can't get pregnant, it will be "dry" and sold as a heifer, no matter how old. That's not the same as a "dry" cow who has past the age of breeding.
