The Story

Marv’s Delicatessen is named after my dad, Marv Kerner, a true deli connoisseur who practically raised my sister and I in the Chicago North Shore deli scene. Most of my childhood food memories were seen though a huge corned beef sandwich or an early morning lox plate! Marv was a charismatic man who would meet with his group of friends every morning at the deli to schmooze and discuss the latest sporting events and to try to figure out how to hit the next four game parlay bet. I remember sitting and listening to him carry on with his childhood friends (what a bunch of characters) and, man, could they eat! The table was always full of food and they would say to me “Go ahead, Stevie, eat!” The great delicatessen food didn’t end there. Our fridge at home always had a pound of corned beef, pastrami, chopped liver, a dozen bagels and a loaf of rye bread. So its no wonder that after spending my entire adult life as a chef and restaurateur I would eventually open a place paying homage to my dad and the great memories of food he passed on to me. I am so happy to now have a chance to bring that happiness to others! I hope our guests come to Marv’s and unwind with family, schmooze with friends and enjoy the classic delicatessen fare I love so dearly!

Served the most bitter and terrible tasting Limeade on the planet. No amount of sugar could rescue it. They should just make one for themselves and taste it. I am still not sure how it is possible to make a lime imitate aromatic bitters. If you order an appetizer, define for the staff the genre of food known as appetizers. Then to make sure on top of that, inform the staff to serve the appetizer before and and not with the main course. It's not genius to figure out that if you make it and plop it all down at once, then the main course is going to be stone cold for your customers, but NO they don't get the basics right at this place despite actually having some wonderful food. Don't be surprised when it goes out of business from purposefully falling on a sword of staff indifference and process control ignorance. Not one of three visits have been without glaring blunders like this. Another example, I ask for a larger portion of Au Jus to go. I prepare a $3 tip on a $12 ticket and the dude still comes out with a half-full standard container portion. Think he got the tip? Scathing review? Yes. Deserved it? Yes.

Marv's is incredible. I plan to take everyone I know there to enjoy the amazing food. They have the best Matzo Ball Soup I've ever had, and a reuben unlike anything you can find outside of Chicago or NYC. The owner was not only delivering food and drinks, he was walking around and talking to tables of people. I'll definitely be coming back for years.
