We, at MarvelOptics.com , admire all those who are working hard to build a better future for themselves. We thank all our Scholarship applicants in sharing their hopes, dreams and ambitions with us. 2016 Fall Semester's Scholarship Winner, Jessica Fry told us about her journey and experience with Marvel Optics Scholarship Program.

"When searching for scholarships, there's never a shortage of applications requesting an in-depth essay on an obscure topic or a personal statement that reflects every step of your life. Coming across the Marvel Optics scholarship was refreshing. The Marvel Optics Scholarship still asked for a personal touch, but asked for submissions in a creative way. After writing almost 40 essays this summer, I was thrilled to spend an afternoon making a video for my entry. My video, though simple, reminded me that finding help towards my education was not just about my GPA or how much research I could find on a certain society, it was about the journey I have went through and what brought me to where I am today. I was able to share my journey as a military child through pictures and a short narrative and felt no pressure to be overly impressive. I not only had a great time making my video, but watching the videos of other applicants as well. I'm extremely honored to have been selected as the Fall 2017 recipient and am so thankful to Marvel Optics for creating this scholarship to help not only me, but other students around the country. "

The ability to see is a marvelous ability and truly a gift of life. With the gift of sight we are not only able to solve problems that might arise, but also enjoy nature’s beauty. With a glance one can communicate a message without the need to utter even a single word. There may be times of peril when the ability to see clearly is the difference between devastating harm and safety. It is these reasons from which the importance of sight can be drawn.

I have been wearing bifocals since I was in kindergarten and had to have my eyes lenses removed. What I remember from that time is the discomfort and awkwardness of the patches that I had to wear after having the surgery and the discomfort of having such heavy pieces of glass rest upon the bridge of my nose. How can I forget the times when the frames my parents would pick for me would require slightly-adhesive nose pads be attached to the underside of the bridge region of the frame to prevent the heavy glasses from causing discomfort. Or those frames with the flexible hooks at the end of the arms designed to help ensure that the weight of the lenses did not pull the glasses right off my nose and straight down to the floor.

My eyes are scarred from being cut open and sewn back up. They are also oblong and improperly shaped because of astigmatism. When I ask myself the question “How do I see the world?” I also think to myself how fortunate I am to even be able to see anything at all!

How do I see the world? I see the world as a beautiful place waiting to be unearthed. I see the world as a blank canvas, ready for its artist to show it what it can become. I see the world as a place full of mystery, adventure, love, trials, and hope. The world is not a place to only live on, but to live in. It is a place to discover, and to be discovered. Like the dandelion, I see the world as a place to find my roots, to grow tall, and to, one day, fly away and explore all that it has to offer. How do YOU see it?
