My TV supports HEVC, and I'll be scuppered if Netflix, Amazon, and anybody else decided they didn't want to pay those sort of royalties. But I believe they will because there just isn't any alternative right now, and it would also mean that an entire second generation of 4K TVs would have to be abandoned.
As somebody pointed out - the whole thing is reminiscent of the excellent HBO/Sky Atlantic show, Silicon Valley, which tells of an engineer working for a Google-like company suddenly hitting upon an algorithm for a highly efficient video codec. What follows is the adventures of setting up and running his own company. It's really funny, and comes from Mike "Beavis & Butthead" Judge.
I have one of these, but the truth is that with most Apple products these days, the quality assurance of the software is sadly lacking behind that of the quality hardware.
While it has performed remarkably well so far (I love it as a fitness tracker and it works incredibly well during on-call), this morning I came across a problem whereby I could not do anything with the touchscreen. Whatever I did, the display would just switch off. Couldn't even get to do a proper shutdown.
So I reset the watch and restored from backup. That fixed it.
I'm getting awfully fed up with the bugs in Apple software - OS X (my work MacBook Air suffered horribly under 10.8.3, and I had to run the beta version of 10.8.4 which was more stable), iOS 8.3 and now Apple Music (iCloud Music Library timeouts galore, iCloud errors, and all manner of insane matters not fit for public consumption under iTunes 12.2).
It's about time Tim Cook and Eddy Cue stopped releasing new models of everything so frequently and fix the problems in the existing products.
The mistake here is that this lady is using an iMac that isn't plugged into power. It's magic. How is she getting any work done? She's typing away merrily..
Forget "Always read the label", it should be "Always plug the desktop computer into the wall socket for crying out loud, or buy a laptop!"

It is, to be honest, a complete pile of buggy crap and only reinforces my view that quality assurance at Apple has dropped considerably over the past five years or so. All pomp, no circumstance.
