Father of 2 girls, hubby to lovely wife. Interested in countryside, hiking, cycling, maps, computers, gadgets, geocaching, shooting, Pink Floyd. Not necessarily in that order.
Introduction
Hi there!  Here's a few bits and bobs about me for those who are interested.

I live in the outstanding countryside of Northwest England with my wife and two daughters.  Used to be a "Townie" but have definitely been converted to a "Country Bumpkin" since moving from my native Yorkshire to where I live now in Lancashire.

I currently work as a Solution Architect for CSC which I enjoy greatly.  I have worked here since 1996 and find it's a great employer and not ashamed to say that I'm a "CSCer".

I have had an interest in computing ever since I was bought my Sinclair Spectrum and I have worked with IT ever since leaving college.  Over the years I have been:-
  • A Laser Printer Engineer for Kyocera.  This is when lasers printers were really expensive costing several thousand pounds each!
  • A Hard Disk Drive tester.  I remember testing a new, high capacity 40Mb drive and having a discussion about the fact that this would be all the capacity that anyone would need!

I have a huge interest in technology and gadgets.  Some who know me may say it's a little obsessive.  One of my main interested for technology is how it can be used to make people's lives easier and indeed more fun.  They way in which technology can be used to enhance education is a great fascination to me too.

When I'm not working, I love to spend time with my family doing one of our many joint activities.

My interests are:-

  • Enjoying family time.
  • IT and technology.
  • Photography.
  • Cycling.
  • Maps.  I have recently started to contribute to OpenStreetMaps and love looking at maps.  A little sad some may say, but I like it.
  • Walking, hiking and map reading.
  • Shooting.
  • Geocaching.  We are "Team Hotpot" on the geocaching website.
  • Scouting.  Both of my children are in the Scouts and while I can't dedicate time to be a leader as I'd like, I help out as and where I can.
  • Astronomy.  A bit of a novice.  Just got my first scope.
  • Music.  Listening not playing!  I am a huge Pink Floyd fan.
  • All things space related.  Shuttle, ISS and so on.
I'm currently involved with a fantastic local community project called B4RN to supply all the properties in my local area with a world class 1Gbs symmetrical fibre broadband connection.

I've been thinking about how to map the locations of the many BT green street cabinets for some time now. Due to the fact that BT refuse to release this data. This seems like an ideal crowdsource mapping project. What's the best tool to manage this sort of activity? I see that OSM has the tag and some have been mapped already.

Thanks +Duncan Innes it's the Openreach telecom cabs I'm interested in due to the fact that the data is very useful and OR do not make it public. I've started adding some that I've noticed in my local area but wondering how best to get a more community related mapping effort. Any pointers would be appreciated.

If you have a Synology device that's visible from the web then it's advisable to shut all the open ports until Synology get to the bottom of the worrying #Synolocker ransomware exploit.

Hello Everyone,

We'd like to give you an update regarding SynoLocker, a ransomware affecting certain Synology servers.

When trying to access DSM, it displays the following message "All important files on this NAS have been encrypted using strong cryptography", in addition to instructions for paying a fee to unlock your data.

What should you do?
If you are seeing this message when trying to login to DSM:

1-Power off the DiskStation immediately to avoid more files being encrypted

2-Contact our Support team so we can investigate further. If you are in doubt as to whether your DiskStation may be affected, please don't hesitate to contact us at security@synology.com

We apologize for any issue this has created, we will keep you updated with latest information as we address this issue.

Our support team can be reached here: http://bit.ly/UgW2wa

It was only a matter of time but it seems that +Google Fiber  is looking to dip its toe in the UK fibre arena.
Web giant held talks to extend its Google Fiber project to Britain, offering speeds more than 10 times faster than BT's upgraded network

I know +Dave DeBaeremaeker. Looking at the report it seems some way off but there's no smoke without fire. It would definitely shake up the incumbent telco for sure if the did kick of in the UK. Targeted right, the take up would be great.

A very friendly welcome and a spotlessly clean guesthouse. The only B&B we've stayed in that has complementary beer and wine in the room! Breakfast was very high quality and delicious. Recommended.
