Java! Real or Not?

A new game that has you guessing which Java class names are real, and which ones are fake. Way harder than it sounds: http://ow.ly/w0J6h #java

Open Data Hong Kong was featured in today's +TimeOut magazine. Thanks +AnnaCummings for the write-up. And +CalvinSit for  matching a dystopian cover photo with our utopian vision!
A growing movement of data enthusiasts are hoping to use government information in apps and products in a way that could change our daily lives. Anna Cummins meets the volunteers behind Open Data Hong Kong What might our city be like in 2020? While we can assume some things won’t have changed much in six years (we’re looking at you, overcrowding and high rent), the future certainly heralds a huge shift in the way Hongkongers interact with inform...

Two articles published in HK media related to Open Data in one day - if we continue like this, everyone might get the idea.

"There is a lot of hype about “big data,” and much of it is ridiculous. Ignore the hype. Learn to be a data skeptic. That doesn’t mean becoming skeptical about the value of data; it means asking the hard questions that anyone claiming to be a data scientist should ask. Think carefully about the questions you’re asking, the data you have to work with, and the results that you’re getting. And learn that data is about enabling intelligent discussions, not about turning a crank and having the right answer pop out.

Data is data. It was valuable 50 years ago, when IBM released the first model 360. It’s more valuable today."

Community Announcement: Update on the direction of +OKFn!

For the last half year, OKFN has been working on evolving the organisation to address certain scaling problems. The results will be published over the next month. But just to tease you, these are the two main points of focus:

Strategy: You would be excused for getting lost on okfn.org (in fact, that's why I visit!) but they seem to think that they are doing too much of everything. So in order to keep the organisation on track, they have developed a strategy and are adjusting the course of their projects accordingly. It will become clearer what OKFn does, and what their goals are.

Communication: Part of that is being better at explaining what 'Open' is and why it is important. They are revamping their brand, their website, and have developed a set of graphics to explain their work and its relevance to people outside the community. The new site will launch on April 14, and will feature the new brand and the graphics. Very much looking forward to their designs. They are also working on more materials/kits to provide their local groups with, so it becomes easier to bootstrap local efforts. Stay tuned!

One of the friendliest shopkeeper in Hong Kong. It's quite possible that he operates in the 6th dimension though, as his shop seems to have _everything_ in stock :)
