Thanks to +Marius Quabeck for the help and inspiration, I've now got Ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 running on my bq M10 +Ubuntu Edition tablet
Next steps are to automate the install, minimise the size of the chroot, clean up the setup/tear down of the chroot and put a icon in the Ubuntu launcher. That said, so far so good! It is a different kind of convergence, but works extremely well, the performance is excellent. This could bridge the gap for me, making the bq M10 a viable laptop replacement when I need it.

I've gotten a container installed with the mate-desktop-environment packages, and it even starts up for a few seconds, but the lack of /proc (among other issues) forces a logout. I don't know where the libertine chroot is so I don't know where to mount -o bind anything. Any chance you would post the instructions on how to get this working correctly?Aug 16, 2016
+Reiner Klenk I still find myself having to connect through adb shell to avoid errors. Any suggestions? Thanks for posting this, everyone, this gives me hope!Aug 16, 2016
+James Hemsing I am using a "traditional" chroot rather than a libertine container. I put some information here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1tXwqYrS84rtliSmwNKGe0l3JJ_aDqxGQoWPOYF4sKRs
This was written from memory so may contain some errors.Aug 17, 2016
