Today is the 45th (21st August, 1968) anniversary of Soviet-led invasion to Czechoslovakia. It was one of the worst events in my country´s modern history.

10th June, 1942, nazis exterminated Czech village of Lidice in one of the cruelest acts of their brutal tyranny. We should never forget.

From May 10th to May 19th, Czech crown jewels were on display again. Exhibition of this national tresure is quite rare, it happens once in 5-10 years. As usual, people were very interested and lot of us took the chance to see it once again. People from around the country went to Prague castle and in average they spent 4-5 hours in a queue to see them for 30 seconds. I was one of these people. It was great feeling.

Most important piece is the crown, made for the coronation of Charles IV. in 1347. It is made from 22-carat gold, containing many sapphires, emeralds, spinels and pearls + ruby, rubellite and aquamarine. At the top of the crown is the cross, which reportedly stores a thorn from Jesus Christ's crown of thorns.

My favourite piece is the coronation - St. Wenceslas' - sword with the blade from 10th century.

Despite the fact that  crown jewels lost its original function in 1918 when Czechoslovak Republic was founded, they remain an important symbols of national independence and statehood connecting present time with important roots of the nation.

Playing Video Games Can Boost Brain Power according to British scientists. OK, not a surprise and not a first time when it was studied. But this is funny:

"All the participants happened to be female as the study was unable to recruit a sufficient number of male volunteers who played video games for less than two hours a week."

:) There is a kid in every grown man, isn´t it? We love to play at any age. :)

Very sad news...

R.I.P.: The Western Black Rhino

Mark this day in history as the day that the Western Black Rhino was declared extinct, hunted to oblivion by poachers.

Animals become extinct for many reasons, as this fascinating post from Factismals recounts. In some circumstances, it's because there was a stronger predator - in this case, Man.

Five-year-old boy took a rifle he was given for his birthday and accidentally shot his two-year-old sister dead - rifle as a gift for 5-years old boy? This is sick. In Kentucky, you can´t send a bottle of beer as a gift to anyone (if you do so, you are risking 5 years in prison) but it´s normal to give guns to small kids. Crazy, crazy, crazy...

I want to know where the parents are while this boy is playing with a real rifle that is loaded, the boy now has to live the rest of his life with the guilt of what he has done, shameful lack of responsibility...
