When I went to Potchefstroom in June to speak at the ATKV School of Writing, I took an idea and a book along. The result was a short story, "Nettievanniebure", which you'll find in this week's Vrouekeur. Thanks to Dineke Volschenk.

"My sussie is spesiaal omdat sy amper vermoor is. Almal dink so."

Ek is so ingenome dat my storie by die derde Woordfeesbundel ingesluit is.

I'm so chuffed that my story made it into the third US Woordfees short story collection. Ultimately, it's up to readers to judge a story's quality, but I think it's one of my best. The collection will be sold exclusively at the Woordfees (2-11 March 2018). Congratulations to the other writers - can't wait to read your stories.

"The darkness fascinates me, so I am a willing traveler. I want to understand it. I want to know why it happens."

Thank you, Michael Sears, for this excellent interview. And thank you, International Thriller Writers Organization, for the honour of being featured in this month's Africa Scene in The Big Thrill. Michael is half of the writing duo, Michael Stanley, known for the Detective Kubu mysteries, set in Botswana.

Hmm ... something different. Or is it? Hartlam is a collection of stories about love, complied by Gerda Taljaard and Deborah Steinmair. One of the 42 tales, "Rooi angelierblare", is mine. Thank you to Anelda van der Poel, who answered my questions about Mediclinic's ICU and also read the story for accuracy.

"Dark Traces by Martin Steyn is fascinating and compelling for its unfamiliar - at least, to most American readers - setting, its well-drawn and sympathetic characters, and the totally believable psychopath whose vicious murders are at the center of the plot."

Thank you D.R. Meredith and New York Journal of Books for this thorough review.

"A damaged but determined detective is matched against a bold and intelligent killer in this captivating debut thriller. Steyn’s Cape Town will be familiar to any city dweller who no longer knows their neighbors and hides behind barred windows."

I can't help hearing Chandler of Friends in my head: "Can you BE more excited about your first review in America?" Not really. In fact, it feels pretty surreal. Thank you to Dan Forrest and the Library Journal for reading and featuring Dark Traces in the latest edition. And to Jessica Powers of Catalyst Press for all the hard work helping Mags find his feet on US soil.

Can you BE more excited about your first review in America?"
