The Orientalist Sale is upcoming at Sotheby’s London, April 25, without any apologies to Edward Said. These pieces come out of private collections, and they’ll probably disappear into private collections, so I’ll busily flag the interesting ones over the next month. Here is lot 1, Gustav Bauernfiend's "A Well in Jaffa," dating from his first visit to Palestine in 1880 (est. $18k-$25k; click on image to enlarge). This German artist, who settled in the country, did many marvelous landscapes, quite a few set in Jaffa. Alex Carmel wrote the definitive biography of Bauernfiend, available also in Hebrew. You'll find Bauernfiend's grave in the Templar cemetery in the German Colony, just inside the gate on the right side.
