Today (Thursday) is the 25th anniversary of the sudden passing of Elie Kedourie, historian of the Middle East (and much more). How well I remember the shock: Elie was in Washington, on a fellowship at the Wilson Center before assuming a new position at Brandeis, when his heart gave out. He’d just retired from the LSE, and was only 66 years old. If you’re too young to know who he was, read this short account by me, written some years back. And then start reading him.
