By a vote of its membership, the Middle East Studies Association, or MESA, has deleted the word “non-political” from the description of its “nature and objectives” in its bylaws. Voting ran 81% in favor of the change. Supporters of BDS led the campaign for the deletion, and they will now push to have MESA endorse the academic boycott of Israel. For years, I’ve insisted that MESA has acted as a political lobby for the Palestinian cause, so I’m delighted that the mask has come off. True scholars should flee this advocacy organization, and not a moment too soon.
