Uri Lubrani, one of Israel’s most nimble trouble-shooters, has passed away. He specialized in dealing with dicey dictators and shadowy horse-traders. His high points: he predicted the demise of the Shah (thus sparing Israel some trouble when it happened), and he took many thousands of Ethiopian Jews from purgatory to Israel. He did me some good turns, and he was a very fine friend to my mentor, Bernard Lewis. He won’t be forgotten, by friends or by history.
