The late Fouad Ajami (in the course of a tribute to Bernard Lewis): “The ‘Davos Men,’ remember them? You know, every time you run into someone, ‘Oh, I just came back from Davos.’ I say, ‘what the hell.’ I don’t mean to be so personal about this, but I think I hold the record of how many times I was invited to Davos, and how many times I said yes, and how many times I cancelled. I never went, but I always liked to say ‘Ah, I’ll be coming.’ And then, of course, on the very same day I was supposed to go to Davos, I would stand on West End Avenue and see cabs go before me, and then return home and take a pass on the great wisdom of Davos.” (min. 59:56)
