Anniversaries! Let’s not forget July 7, 1937: 80 years ago, the (British Royal) Peel Commission recommended the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states. The Arabs rejected the proposal, the Jews accepted it (with reservations), though their state would have been small. Yossi Alpher’s astute summary: “Palestinian and other Arab mistakes have, over these years, radically altered the ratio of land allotted to Jews and Arabs to the extent that today the Palestinian national movement is negotiating over approximately the same small percentage of the overall territory of Mandatory Palestine that the Jews were offered by Peel—and accepted.” Shany Mor’s maps, below, make that very point.
