Question: I’m an adult but my teeth feel loose. What does that mean?

Dr. Taylor: There can be multiple causes, but most often it is a sign of severe gum disease. The patient should see a dentist as soon as possible to get a check up and a deep cleaning. If a tooth is very loose and unable to be restored, it may have to be removed.

Question: What is with the recent reports in the media that flossing is not really needed?

Dr. Martin: I found the articles misleading. “Truth is, we treat patients every day who floss daily and many who don’t. There is no denying the empirical evidence we see: people who floss daily have significantly better dental health than those that don’t.”

Congratulations Dr. Martin and Dr. Taylor for making the list of top dentists! The list was compiled based on the recommendations of other dentists with regard to years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and physical results. This week, we asked Dr. Martin about canker sores: what causes them, and what we can do about them?

Dr. Martin: Canker sores are caused by an internal virus. A certain portion of the population is just more susceptible to getting them. At Martin-Taylor dentistry we offer a painless laser treatment for canker sores that significantly reduces the duration and severity. There is also a topical treatment and a prescription medicine available for the condition.

Question: What can I do about my bad breath?

Dr. Taylor: Good oral hygiene will take care of most bad breath issues. That includes brushing your teeth regularly, flossing daily and seeing your dentist twice a year for professional cleanings. Another practice that can help address bad breath is the use of tongue scrapers. Rinsing your mouth with mouthwash, especially after eating sugary things, can also help. If you have done all of these things and still suffer from bad breath, you may want to visit your medical doctor as it could be a systemic gastrointestinal issue.
