Martin-Baker has completed the US16T ejection seat retrofit programme for the US Air Force’s fleet of Northrop T-38 Talon jet trainers, with the upgrade now providing crews with a “zero-zero” escape system.

On 19th July 2013, the US16T seat saved the lives of 2 air crew when a USAF T-38 crashed during a training mission from Sheppard Air Force Base. The aircraft suffered a bird strike causing both pilots to eject 3 miles south of the base. These were the first 2 lives saved using the US16T seats.

Great work by all those involved.

"On 6th July, 1972, my Mirage caught fire over Malaysia. The seat worked perfectly. I just had time to fold up my parachute, when I heard the welcome sound of an RAF Whirlwind helicopter heading towards me. I enjoyed a glass of champagne with my fellow fighter pilots within the hour of ejecting. The next day, I flew a Mirage home to Butterworth. That night my wife and I enjoyed the mid-year ball together. We are forever grateful for Martin-Baker saving my life.”

An ejection seat fit for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!

During a recent visit to the RAAF base Amberley in Brisbane, Australia, William and Kate were given the opportunity to sit in the cockpit of an F/A-18F Super Hornet, on a Martin-Baker NACES ejection seat.

The Martin-Baker ejection seat has saved the lives of 7439 aircrew lives worldwide from 87 different aircraft types.

1 family, 2 ejectees and an amazing life-saving story.
Lt/Cdr Chris L Field (USN) and his Father, Maj. PB Field (USAF), both ejected using a Martin-Baker seat almost 29 years apart. Chris tells his story:
“At the time (2006) I was a navigator in the EA-6B Prowler. We were on a low level out of Whidbey Is, WA. It was a flight of two aircraft and as we crossed into Oregon, our right engine started to come apart. 15 seconds later we were out of options and the pilot was saying “Eject, Eject, Eject”.
Nothing was left of the aircraft, it crashed just a short distance from us since we were low and fast (500ft and 420kts). The crash site was literally a smoking hole and if it wasn’t for your great product, none of us would have had a chance.
Because of Martin Baker, I had a Dad to grow up with, and my newly-wed wife and I were able to go on and have two beautiful daughters, by the way for the Grandfather you saved 30 years ago.
I’m not sure if people think of the cascading effects of saving a life or lives, but for us this has been huge. And for that, we thank you”.

"It is almost 55 years since I escaped a fiery RAF jet using the Martin-Baker seat. After pulling the 'firing handle', I recovered sensibility inverted to see the burning Vampire T11 below as it head for a watery burial in the South China Sea. A second later, the automatics having worked perfectly, the parachute deployed. I was very grateful. The life saving experience remains with me to this day."
