I'm not a big Superbowl fan but it's a great excuse for vegan-friendly organic Mill Street beer and homemade gluten-free pizza! Go Giants!

In 2008, my boyfriend Brock (now husband) and I co-organized a cycling fundraiser to raise awareness about Canada's Childhood Obesity Crisis. With the support of the community, we raised over $25,000.00 for SickKids Hospital in Toronto to be used for obesity-related programming! I drove the support vehicle while Brock cycled 4500 km across the country wearing a 40-lb weight vest. We left Queen's Park, Toronto on July 1st and arrived in Victoria, British Columbia on July 31st. At the end of the fundraiser, we got engaged! It was an unforgettable adventure. HORRIBLE experience! Kirsten Plester of Verico Reliance Mortgages in Orangeville is unprofessional, unreliable, and almost lost us our very first home. My brother recommended Kirsten to us so we anticipated a good first-time home buying experience. We were very wrong! We worked with Kirsten for 6 months… While we recognize that we weren’t an easy or “normal” case (my husband changed jobs during the course of that 6-month period which prolonged our ability to get approved), we often sensed frustration in speaking to Kirsten on the phone. She rarely made us feel like she had the time for us, often rushing us off the phone. She chastised my husband when he informed her that his pay rate at his new job was going to be less than originally anticipated, remarking sarcastically, “you’re not making this easy for me”. The way she spoke to him was unprofessional and insensitive. Once we found a home we wanted to buy, she began the process of finding a lender, and kept two lenders on the hook to see which one would give us a better rate (we later learned that this was a big “no-no” in the industry). However, she failed to respect the tight timeline we were working under, and as a result of being downtown for the day and not having the ability of reviewing offers on her phone until the following day, we ended up having to get an extension because her job wasn’t done on time. This was a recurring theme, as she was often unavailable during entire days at a time. At one point, her advice to me was to “sign both offers and accept whichever offer came back approved first, because they were both basically the same”. When my husband said he didn’t think that this sounded like a smart way to determine which lender to go with, especially since the offers were very different and felt like she hadn’t explained them properly, or even examined them herself, she became irate on the phone and said she didn’t have any more time to speak that night. The entire reason she was not able to meet with us in person was because she wasn’t willing to do so. My husband made the decision at that point to not work with Kirsten any longer, as she had already put us in a very tight position. She had also on several occasions been very rude to our realtors on the phone. There are multiple instances I haven’t even mentioned of speaking or acting in an unprofessional and unethical manner, and I hope that no one else has this negative or horrible an experience in buying their first home. Our intention for this review is that no one else has the same experience working with her. I would NOT recommend Kirsten for her services. We went with a different broker who was able to pull off a miracle in a very short timeline, and make sure we didn’t lose our home!

Amazing experience! Here's what my husband had to say: As first-time home buyers, we had a wonderful experience with our realtors, Jess and Scott Poland, of At Home Group Realty, Inc. They came via strong referral to us from my sister, who also used them to buy their first home and had a terrific experience. Through a challenging process of viewing homes over several months in a hot market, and coaching us through several (unsuccessful) bidding wars, we always felt like we were their only clients. They were always available to work around our crazy work schedules, often able to meet the same day. At one point, we ended up firing our mortgage broker upon learning that she had totally dropped the ball, and Jess had a new broker lined up for us within hours! Our new broker was awesome! We were also working on a tight timeline through our home-buying process, as my wife Marta was pregnant, and we needed to be in our new home before the baby arrived. Jess and Scott took it upon themselves to contact home owners personally in a community we desired to live in, explaining that they had qualified buyers who would be interested in buying in that area. It was through this process that we eventually found our home! Jess and Scott went far above and beyond the call of duty, regardless of the fact we were buying a starter home. They made us feel like valued clients, and we will definitely be using their services in the future when it’s time to upgrade for our growing family!
