Who is Marsha Leigh really?

I occurred to me today as I was changing the profile photo on my site's about me, that I needed to take stock once again of who I am or who I am becoming. Or..should that be "who I still want to be". Can someone at my age still not be sure? Isn't that something only people like my millennial daughter should be doing?

The answer is a resounding no. I woke up today realizing that I will always be searching, learning, progressing, finding new interests, finding new visions, and ever evolving into who I am. Sometimes this becomes a struggle as you age - I may have given up yesterday - but today is a new day after all - I've been given this gift of being here.

I had forgotten I haven't blogged in a while. I haven't shown the world who Marsha Leigh is today. My brand, my profile photo, my words and pictures show a person like millions of others, posting away - trying to have a voice in the world.

I made a twitter post last night that said (paraphrased), "What would be a great last post?" (in case you left the world the next day) - please retweet yours.
----- silence ----- Naturally, none of my 500 or so followers replied. "Followers" does not mean you have engagement. Followers are people that click a box on a website. But that doesn't mean each of us don't have something to say to the world. If one person is inspired, that is enough.

A great and poignant quote from Robin Williams' character, Sy, says, "And if these pictures have anything important to say to future generations, it's this: I was here. I existed. I was young, I was happy, and someone cared enough about me in this world to take my picture."

Yes, I was here! That's what most of us are trying to do online as we post and post and keep posting. But that's ok - that's important. We reach out - we show ourselves - and sometimes we make friendships.

In my case, as an artist I haven't arrived and I need to stop thinking I will.

There are some things I have learned about myself from writing and creating art and sharing it online. When I did a mouse roll-over of Orson Welles as Edward Rochester &
Joan Fontaine that I put in my about me years ago is that I remembered a picture I like to see myself as Jane Eyre- patiently waiting after suffering for so long -for something amazing to happen - a happy ending? Maybe.

I keep thinking, maybe if that photo is sold, another writing memoir is published, until someone retweets me, I'm doing it wrong. But that shouldn't be my goal - my goal is the process.

Maybe my last twitter post could be Jane's last twitter post which might have been: "I know what it is to live entirely for and with what I love best on earth." ~ Charlotte Brontë.
