Hi Aubrey, I finally found out that they are a spiny variety of  Chayote, which is in the cucumber family and hails from Mexico originally. I found them on the bland side. they seem to have come and gone around here, in that I haven't seen them in ages. Up here they are usually in the market i the autumn.
