I have worked for the last eighteen years as an academic, e-learning professional, educational technologist, software developer, analyst and technology manager, giving me a wide understanding of educational technology in higher education. I am an accomplished strategist and technologist and have developed technical solutions for several universities.
I have been lucky to be able to combine my expertise in higher education with the commercial aspects of e-learning. This has been developed over the last eleven years during my time at Commander Communications Ltd, my work with DeakinPrime (the commercial arm of Deakin University), as director of my own consulting company and with Swinburne Online (a commercial joint venture between Seek and Swinburne University of Technology).
Finally, I have a very good understanding of the issues and challenges facing higher education around the world. I am committed to high quality open education and I do not believe that open education is incompatible with a commercial model of delivery. In fact I believe that the most successful providers of web based learning opportunities in the future will be open in all senses of the word.

For me, in the higher ed sector, I'm not too surprised. There is exceptionally low churn in institutional LMSs mainly because of contracts lasting 4 or 5 years and an extreme unwillingness to invest in the necessary change management if an alternative LMS is identified at the LMS review process carried out (a year or 2 before a contract expires). A new LMS has to offer exceptional feature benefits compared to an existing LMS for a change to be even considered. In my experience, even when a review identifies a 'better' LMS at the review process it will still not be adopted because the academic managers of the LMS consider the required change management to be to great.
Most institutions are unwilling to invest in meaningful, widespread development of staff to use an existing LMS let alone have to think about re-training those that have embraced the current system.
I'd also question the ability of most review panels to actually understand possible strategic benefits of a new LMS. They are almost always staffed and led by those that don't use the system with token practitioners included whose voice will generally be overlooked by 'practical' considerations. This isn't helped by the fact that most HE institutions have fragmented or non-existent visions for online learning. I could go on....
OBANZ (Open Badges Australia and New Zealand) community calls are similar to the Open Badges community calls that Mozilla runs. The difference is that the OBANZ calls happen in our down under timezones.
Community calls are intended to highlight Open Badges projects and to facilitate the sharing of questions, issues, experiences and research. Many organization in New Zealand and Australia are exploring open badges or have already set up projects. The calls will let us learn from each other, and explore what Open Badges could achieve down under. We are anticipating a monthly call initially, increasing in frequency as more projects kick off and the community grows.
The Mozilla team has been very helpful to get us started, and we are lucky that for this first call, two team members, Doug Belshaw (Web Literacy Lead) and Jade Forester (Global Community Coordinator) are joining us to talk about the Open Badges project, specifically current topics like

- Cities of Learning
