I would like to thank all of you for your spirit and intellect and energy in the Unity8 adventure. +Popescu Sorin, your videos of Unity8 have been the best way for me to see that dream take shape! I hope they continue to inspire desktop developers around the world. And the beauty of free software is that projects are bigger than people or companies.
Many elements of the code in the Ubuntu Phone project continue - snaps grew out of our desire to ship apps reliably and efficiently and securely, the unity8 code itself will continue to be useful for UBports and other projects. And the ideas that we have pushed for are now spreading too.
Finally, I should celebrate that Ubuntu consists of so many overlapping visions of personal computing, that we have the ability to move quickly to support the Ubuntu GNOME community with all the resources of Canonical to focus on stability, upgrades, integration and experience. That's only possible because of the diversity of shells in the Ubuntu family, and I am proud of all of our work across that full range.

Has Ubuntu 17.10 gone all Harry Styles, then ? omgubuntu.co.uk - Make GNOME Shell Look Exactly Like Unity 7 with this Theme31w
I think Ubuntu faces a problem ahead of offering no real value proposition to existing or new Linux users. The distro now has a proven track record of being quite difficult, forcing users to learn new technologies but without the real community support to back them.
I've been an Ubuntu user since Dapper, but moved away to Fedora then Arch about a year ago, thinking that if I'm going to have to learn systemd (to fix my broken Upstart system), i may as well do it on a distro where it was better supported. I was wary of having to do the same with Wayland Vs Mir as well.
This decision you've taken is the right one, but I fear it may be too late. Next time you're thinking of having your users learn new things, please try to ensure it is really worth their investment.16w
+JohnWells I believe the problems stems from a decided lack of "guides" to hold your hand. Apart from the usual "Quick Start Guides" that are needed with ubuntu, canonical have a real oppourtunity to distil all of the learning-linux lessons of the past into a video course that is lead by a 'lovely lady' (ala Nixie Pixel) who could instruct users the best course of action, to say 'cut an MP3 track' etc and upload it to youtube with a basic background.
Mark is surrounded by techno-philes whereas your average Ubuntu user is not. And it is this dichotomy of support that is simply beyond ask-ubuntu (and that is what is required).
The likes of Skillsology would love to do a course in Ubuntu, but the fact that there is so much lacking in this regard, means that quite simply either canonical or the Ubuntu-community hasn't done their homework in providing graphical-guides to the ubuntu-system, and it is this that is generally needed.
And by graphical guides - I mean websites filled with gifs.
I wish Mark well. I guess after the 'brain-storming' and 'discourse' left the website, coupled with the fact it is neigh-on impossible to talk to gnome-developers, Ubuntu is now in ......
'broadcast not consult' mode.
My ethics remain in promoting bounties to resolve underlying issues - however; this seems to be rare amongst users, which I donot understand.
My only underlying request to Mark is that, when the IPO emerges, offer those users on Launchpad - first dibs at ordinary shares in the company in order to make it more community-lead and thereby less like long-tails jumping off a listing ship.
Thats what good-governance looks like from where I stand.
Think about it Mark, it would be the python of the the stock market-community lead, community-transparent.
And it is more democratic.
However, this is his baby and project and I'd like to thank-him for the fact that I haven't used windows in over a decade.16w

Loved Unity (HUD is genius, Dash is great). I haven't decided to upgrade to 17.10 yet (due to GNOME). However, I am still sticking to Ubuntu and move to 17.10 with GNOME at some point in next 6 months.11w
