Amazing snowfall in Albuquerque, wow! Morning temperature is 21F; weather mongers are saying 52F by afternoon.

Nice essay on cyber-security within a global Internet as pursued from within a nation-state. Can we actually build a secure Internet without the compromises of national intelligence gathering?

From Quartz's weekend news brief...

"Under Obama’s leadership, the US is the only wealthy economy that has largely recovered from the global recession, and his signature health-care reform is both the biggest expansion of US social benefits since Lyndon Johnson, and its most fiscally responsible. Many of his failings can be traced to the Republican strategy that resulted in this week’s electoral victories: No compromise, even when the two parties’ interests align."

Something to ponder regarding the dysfunctional aspect of US politics.

The change in political tide makes one wonder how this country actually functions. I guess the adage "if it's working, don't fix it" doesn't apply to political physics.

Nature Publishing Group is opening up its archive of science papers to the general public. There is one hitch, though: to read an article, you must use a proprietary application called ReadCube (https://www.readcube.com/) that sandboxes the paper so that unfettered access is still not possible. Note that ReadCube is only available for Apple products and Windows computers - ugh!

"ReadCube, a software platform similar to Apple’s iTunes, will be used to host and display read-only versions of the articles' PDFs. If the initiative becomes popular, it may also boost the prospects of the ReadCube platform, in which Macmillan has a majority investment."

This information was first seen on /. (http://science.slashdot.org/story/14/12/02/0643256/nature-makes-all-articles-free-to-view).
Publisher permits subscribers and media to share read-only versions of its papers.

Now, if Google would add this tracking capability to its Sky Map application so that I could point my phone to the skies when I see one of those points of light skipping across the night's darkness.

Another one of those "go figure" moments...
It would be an understatement to say that voters in the recently completed midterm elections didn’t exactly feel warm and fuzzy about incumbents on the ballot this year -- even about the ones they voted for. According to the 2014 exit poll of voters, 59 percent of those who voted said they weren’t happy with Republican leadership in Congress, even as they were handing control of the Senate to the GOP. A meme making its way around social media, se...
