Twas the night before Free Comic Book Day and not a creature was stirring.. certainly not I as I was moments away from a dad nap whilst "watching" the league. The shop is all set up for our big day tomorrow and we are ready to go.. it occurs to me that I may have neglected to mention the Annual Mk1 Sale that goes hand in hand with FCBD so... drum roll.. "There is at least one more reason to get along to Mk1's Free Comic Book Day this coming Saturday May 2nd 2015 and that is Mk1's only annual storewide Sale! 25% off everything in store on the day... Mk1 celebrates 26 years in Hamilton this May – naturally the centerpiece for our festivities will be our annual Free Comic Book Day!

Free Comic Book Day Saturday May 2nd 2015
Free Comic Book Day is held on the first Saturday every May. Free Comic Book Day is all about promoting reading – it’s a great way to kick start that all important reading habit in the young as well as a means of reconnecting with the simple joy of reading a fun story. Free Comic Book Day is the best day to check Mark One out for the first time, and a fantastic way for Mark One to say thanks to all the people that have kept us in business these past 26 years!

The Nitty Gritty

Mk1 is located at 551 Victoria Street Hamilton and our doors will be open from 9am – 5pm on Saturday May 2nd. The shop will have numerous tables laden with nearly 4000 comics, divided into MK1’s recommended age ranges – All Ages, Teens Plus and Mature Readers. Everybody who visits on the day is invited to choose three free comics from the tables. You can view this year's offerings and more info about this annual international event at the official website www.freecomicbookday.com - and Mk1's own website www.mk1.co.nz

Reminder: Hamilton's Annual Armageddon Pop Culture expo is this weekend! (14th and 15th of March – ticket info can be found here http://armageddonexpo.com/nz/ ) A last minute shipment of Pop Culture merchandise means we will have some very cool new offerings on the stand that we haven't had on Mk1 shop shelves before. Once again we will have our Table of Show Specials and a huge Graphic Novel sale. Just like last year I'll be publishing the specials on Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus so if you can't make the show keep an eye on these sites so you can be first inline to nab any remaining bargains once the show is finished.
Back at the shop we will be trying something a little different... With most of our merchandise at the show we will have room to put out trestle tables containing our entire Back Issue Comic Stash... We usually rotate this stock in and out of the back issue comic selection but for this weekend only that entire selection will be searchable and priced at just $1 dollar each! So lots of reasons to visit Mk1 and the Mk1 Armageddon stand this weekend - check out this week's shipment gallery for a few more reasons and see you at the show! http://www.mk1.co.nz/blog/shipments-due-march-week-two-2015/

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2015 REVIEW
Almost got the shop back together after Mk1′s biggest Free Comic Book Day yet. A huge thank you to everybody who turned up on the day or wished us well from afar.. Thanks to team MK1: Rachel, Ella, Michael, Zac and Georgia. Cheers to Lance and Tom for organising Darth Vader’s appearance and to Darren for providing Darth a Scout Trooper guard. Thanks heaps to Hamilton’s Cosplay community for adding extra fun and colour to the day. Cheers to Little J and Hazel Hayes for the coffee power. Thanks to the Waikato Times reporter and photographer for previewing and covering our day. There were lots of Tweets, bulk email outs, facebook shares even a letter to the editor – so cheers to everybody who helped spread the word – nearly 1400 people attended so you really helped make this event huge! Next year Free Comic Book Day is the 7th of May so put that date in your calendar. Check out our Facebook gallery for lots of photos from the day http://www.mk1.co.nz/blog/free-comic-book-day-2015-may-2nd/

Every few weeks Sir visits the shop - I give him what I like to think of as my usual courteous greeting - welcoming him to my store again - I don't pounce on Sir and demand to know what he wants - just a friendly greeting to let Sir know that I'm here and happy to help.  He always responds with a snort or a grunt.

I assumed that the snort/grunt was one of only a few communication options  - maybe he has a head injury or some type of verbal impairment - could be anything..    I choose to interpret the snort/grunt as his version of a  polite response within a normal daily human interaction with a fellow Victoria Street Hamilton denizen.  So I was quite surprised while out at lunch the other week to encounter Sir and witness him in a marvelously verbose conversation with a co-worker.

So today I greet Sir in my usual manner - this time maintaining eye contact and wait expecting a response.  To which I receive a "Snort/grunt"  and if I'm not mistaken a disdainful dismissive stare.   "Really?" I ask. "Hummph" he says.   We have progress... Snort/Grunt and Hummph indeed.

Hamilton's Annual Armageddon Pop Culture expo was a very big deal for Mk1. Our stand was mad busy as was the store. So busy that I failed to find time (or energy) to post our specials and goings on to the Mk1 site, Twitter, Facebook or Google Plus as promised! We spent Monday putting the store back together and have set up our "Show Special Table" in the store - check the photos attached to see the deals on offer for the rest of the month. I don't have time to post a full report here but I would like to say a big thank you to Ella, Emma, Michael, Hayley, John& Rach for your hard work before, during and after the show - and cheers to everybody who dropped by the stand, the store or who wished us well from afar. So next thing on the Mk1 horizon - Free Comic Book Day!
