Why is it that we never get to choose the quality of the video feeds for YouTube on mobile devices? I live in South Africa and bandwidth comes at a premium. On my original 2mb line I avoided YouTube because there was just too much buffering going on and it made everything unwatchable. I finally upgraded my line to 4mb just so that I can get rid of that frustration and actually watch the videos being shared with me. But now the speed detection mechanism is picking higher definition videos because of my bandwidth upgrade, and my viewing experience is no better than what it was before.

Way back in the day we still had the option of choosing the video quality, but that choice is now being made on our behalf and we are forced to purchase higher and higher bandwidth packages just in order to get decent video experience. Which we never really get. Because the software adapts and pushes the bandwidth requirement even higher.

Am I being paranoid or are we being manipulated into spending more and more money on bandwidth? Who's pockets are being lined by this farce? Who's lifestyle are we financing?

It is stuff like this that makes me wonder whether the Internet really is by the people for the people or whether it too has been co-opt ed as another way to funnel money out of your pocket and into big Corp.

Google: we do no evil.
I wonder.

The YouTube app on Android lets you choose video resolution... 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, 240p down to 144p. Grant it, the setting's a bit more hidden...but you can still choose lower resolutions. On PC, I'd recommend the "Download YouTube as MP4" plugin. It lets you download the videos in a resolution of you choice.

Every friend I have with a job that involves picking up something heavier than a laptop more than twice a week eventually finds a way to slip something like this into conversation:

LC_ALL = (unset)

Two issues here: The language files might need to be generated:
sudo locale-gen en_US.UTF-8

The software trying to set the location for some reason does not have access to the file that needs to be altered

Add LC_ALL="en_US.UTF-8" to /etc/environment

It's really not like this should be news to us..
It’s probably not news to most readers that we should all eat more fruits and vegetables. The advice has circulated seemingly since time
