What We Leave Behind

Where we started
Where we are
Where we will be

These are 3 of the 4 buildings that the Detroit News has, or will, call home. A news staff always shapes its environment, but it is also shaped by its home. I work in a newsroom that has been a home to reports for 97 years; you can’t help but feel their spirit in the wall of this place. It is like a distant chorus compelling us to uphold our news values, continue our traditions.

Ok friends, I'm asking you to support one of the coolest reporters I've ever worked with, Paul Salopek, reach his Kickstarter goal so he can finish his amazing journey. His Out of Eden Walk is the craziest idea ever, but where would we be without crazy? Skip a couple of Starbucks and give the money to Paul, you'll like yourself for doing it.

What we leave behind

Adorning the outside of our #detroitnews building are dozens of carved stone ‘printer’s marks.’ These marks, most from the 16th century, were early trademarks for the printers of the day, attesting to the authenticity of the books they created. Buyers could trust that the books that carried these printer’s marks were original. I think that the designers of our building added these marks to connect us to the history of printing, but also to affirm that we too were creating something original, authentic and trustworthy.

What we leave behind. Can the history of a place be written in its stairs? When I first came to the Detroit News I took comfort in the worn down stairs. How many reporters had run these stairs on deadline? How many stories started with a trip down these steps? These stairs are my link to those who came before me; a fraternity of storytellers.
