R.I.P. Charles Townes, without whom all those poor sharks would be frickin' laserless.
Charles Hard Townes, a professor emeritus of physics who built the first microwave amplifier -- the maser -- and designed the first laser, died Jan. 27 at the age of 99. After receiving the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics, he went on to pioneer the use of lasers in astronomy.

New Nexus 7  -
Anyone else seeing patterns of green pixels on the screen of their new Nexus 7? I know this isn't a problem with the screen itself, since the pixels show up in a screen capture.

A new version of the Android app is out... it promises a "Streamlined Gmail login" and "Assorted bug fixes & stability improvements"!

"Streamlined Gmail login" in this case really means "integrating GMail correctly"; it now uses the account already on your device instead of asking for the username and password.

This isn't really a gift shop (Google's classification as of 05/17/14)... Unless you're gifting wine! In that case, it's one of the best "gift shops" in Lodi and one that I stop by every time I'm in the area. Jeremy and Choral really take the time to describe their wines and tell the unique stories behind them... And it doesn't hurt that the wines are excellent and presented beautifully (their background in graphic design manifests itself in the beautiful label designs).

I came here two weeks ago and loved it. The Starbucks two doors down was packed, but there were plenty of seats (and equally free WiFi) at Reveille. The staff is extra-attentive and super friendly and I really enjoyed my Macchiato. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in the Castro!

Earl Grey bread pudding? Don't mind if I do! With the assortment of bread pudding flavors here (as well as sauces and other toppings) you're bound to find something you'll like here. I had Earl Grey bread pudding with lemon sauce on a recent visit and will definitely be back for more the next time I'm in Hayes Valley.

The #1 spot on the SFist list is well-deserved; this has been my top spot for the past 5 years. Insider tip - Once you know the menu, phone ahead and go directly to the separate cash register for phone orders.

There is actually a post office here, but you might walk by it without noticing it, since it blends in with the other shops in the strip mall. This is the only post office open for retail operation on Saturdays in the area, so they get bonus points for that.
