"Perhaps the sentences I write are the seams that hold me together. Perhaps, that's the real reason I write. Perhaps, in the end, it's the only reason."
– These thoughts, and more, were prompted by my Election Night 2016 experiences. I share them all in my latest newsletter at http://eepurl.com/cn0S25. (Don't miss the December issue – subscribe today at http://eepurl.com/bwsLb1 or on any page of my website, www.markdavidgerson.com)

Keith Haring's Tuttomondo mural in Pisa is the site of the current scene I'm working on for my novel-in-progress, The Emmeline Papers. Although the mural wasn't completed until June 1989, I have exercised my creative license as author-God-creator to move that event back to November 1988 for the purposes of my story!

Unlike its Sara's Year and After Sara's Year predecessors, set solely in Montreal and Nova Scotia, The Emmeline Papers has expanded across the Atlantic to also encompass London and Tuscany!

Look for The Emmeline Papers this spring. Meantime, catch up on the critically acclaimed exploits of Sara & Co. – in paperback or ebook from major online booksellers or signed by me to you from www.thesarastories.com

When I stopped work this evening on The Emmeline Papers, my novel-in-progress and the newest installment in my Sara Stories, I checked my word count. It's a largely meaningless exercise, given that I can't yet know the final length of the book. Still, it was fun to note the number: 37,333!

Will I be finished The Emmeline Papers in time for a spring release? That's my intuitive sense and that sensing has never yet been wrong, however much I have doubted it on past projects and still, in moments, do on this one. Meantime, while you are waiting to find out, catch up with the two earlier books in the series: Sara's Year and After Sara's Year – in paperback or ebook from major online booksellers or signed by me to you from www.thesarastories.com

There are many versions of this poem by Martin Niemöller, because he spoke many versions of it through the years. A Lutheran pastor, Niemöller came to regret his early support for Hitler and spent 8 years in concentration camps as a result of his outspoken opposition. He narrowly escaped execution.

This version comes from United States Holocaust Memorial Museum...

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Larger Than Life
Some years back when I was visiting Toronto, a friend treated me to a ticket to Barbra Streisand's first-ever concert performance in that city. Although we were sitting high in the rafters in a hockey arena that was anything but intimate, I was startled by ...

2017 marks my 20th anniversary in the U.S. as what I like to call an "accidental immigrant." Read how getting lost on a Minnesota back road turned me into a published author and writing coach, not to mention a father, an artist, a Reiki Master and an energy healer!

On this Christmas Day and first day of Hanukkah, may we each do our best to live in the light that this season symbolizes, and may we find and honor the light not only in ourselves but in each other. Whatever you celebrate and however you celebrate it, happy holidays!

When it comes to writing books (or reading them), I tend to be a slow starter. I tiptoe gingerly through the opening paragraphs and chapters until one day some ineffable something shifts and I'm hooked. On that day, obsession grips me and I can't be stopped. If I'm not quite there yet with The Emmeline Papers, my newest novel-in-progress, I have passed an important milestone: I've designed a working cover.

Considering that this latest installment in my Sara Stories has already altered its trajectory several times since tricking me into starting it, I can't guarantee that what's illustrated here represents a final cover concept. But it feels close, as does my sense of how the story will unfold.

You see, I never plan or outline. Rather, my stories reveal themselves to me only as I write them. With The Emmeline Papers, however, I am sensing far more of the story much earlier than I ever have before. Perhaps my Muse trusts me more than she used to. More likely, I trust her more than I used to. Regardless, I now I feel that I know enough to design a provisional cover, something that always helps make a work-in-progress feel more concrete to me.

Meanwhile, even if I still have much work ahead of me on this third book in my Sara Stories, its two predecessors continue to collect a ton of loyal fans. If you're not yet one of them, isn't it time? Pick up Sara's Year and After Sara's Year today and find out why everyone loves Sara!
