When I travel, I only carry travel-on luggage. I never lose my bag. It saves me a tonne of time when I get to skip the luggage carousel. And now that most airlines charge you to check a bag, it also saves me money.  If you want to know how to save time…

Last week I started up a war. I wrote a controversial post about the country of Africa and said that due to bad press because of the Ebola media hoopla, I was going to share some “lesser known facts” so people could understand the ‘real Africa’. I wrote a…
Africa is a country. That's what I wrote in my blog last week. I knew people would be upset, but what blew me away was what people complained about!

“Why do we waste all that time and effort sending people over when we could just send money instead. After all, those people need the jobs and when people go over to help out they are stealing work away from others – and volunteers usually don’t know what…
Why do we waste all that time and effort sending people over when we could just send money instead?. Do volunteers steal work from the poor?

I work with a lot of people who work incredibly long hours, in remote and tough regions of the world, for very little recognition.  Most striking. They pay for the privilege to do so. A volunteer I know (details are intentionally vague to protect her) was…

One of the best and worst things about travel is eating all kinds of strange and wonderful new things. Once you get off of the plane and away from the abomination that is airplane “food”. I always try to eat local. Nothing gives your tastebuds a workout…

Is racism killing black people in the US? I hope not, and as a Canadian, it is easy to pat myself on the back about our lack of racism when we watch our American neighbours implode every weekend with news about cops shooting another black kid. It made me…
Is there racism in Canada? Compared to other countries we deny our racism. Canadian racism is not violence or rants, it is much more subtle.

“Do they know it’s Christmas?” That is the lyric of the Bob Geldof song. The song he sang with a bunch of celebrities 30 years during the BandAid concert to raise funds and awareness about starving people in Africa. He is trying to do it again for Ebola…

The country of Africa is receiving a lot of bad press during this time of CRISIS OUTBREAK of EBOLA (the deadliest disease in recorded history). While these fears should probably be increased, I wonder if it is time to also share lesser known African…

Here is a fun game. At your next dull meeting, grab a few friends and have everyone pull up the picture below. Use it to play buzzword bingo. First to circle 15 words used in the meeting wins! Last one to 15 buys the first round. Sustainability is one of…
Sustainability is a buzz-word in development circles. That is a problem. You slap it on the proposal or face donor-funding suicide.

I was in the middle of a boring class and unfortunately I was the teacher. My nightmare is to have too many people nod in agreement while I am speaking. If everyone already agrees with you, it feels comfortable like a warm hug on a sunny summer day. A…

Introduction
I am a traveller and a teacher who understands that sustainability is a set of tools, not just an attitude. I designed a process for volunteers to succeed overseas at STMnetwork.ca. I teach tens of thousands of people how to succeed overseas. I want to change how the world works and help others do the same. I am available to speak a compelling message at your event, train your team in fresh ways or provide a guest post on your blog. Check out my many free resources at stopover.ca

What a great oasis on the coast! Beautiful grounds lush greenery, and the pebble beach is clean and relaxing. Friendly staff and great food around the relaxing poolside make Kaliko a hidden gem.

poor service. I dropped in to this location to ask about getting my toners refilled and was told that I needed to return with the model number. I pointed it out on the box I was carrying with the old cartridge. The employee then told me he had mis-spoke and what he needed was form me to leave and call in the order to him. I asked if I could use my cell to call him at that moment, he declined. Eventually the employee let me know that the reason they could not assist me was that they use a third party service to purchase cartridges, and his manager had told him that he was not to reveal this source. His concern was that if I was present, I would see his source on the computer. I informed him that I was willing to continue the process with him, if he could serve me while I was there, again he declined, citing that these were company rules he was following. No fault to the employee - he was courteous throughout the conversation - but the policy of the company ensured that they lost the sale. In a ironic turn of events, the refusal of the company to serve me at the counter out of fear that I would use the information to go directly to the online source, meant that when I returned to my office I did search for an online source and placed my own order with an online company.

Perhaps my question "how much for an oil change" was confusing, but the response both times from both salespeople of $50 was clear. Unfortunately the true bill was $127 when I went to pick up my bike. You guys got me - I feel you ripped me off. Your comments that your free check of the battery charge only reinforces that you did not really look at the issue I was having with starting the bike. Cursory service, deceptive bait and switch practices, I only hope it was worth having a one-time sale and customer. I will encourage people to go elsewhere.
