As I search Singapore for natural landscapes to photograph I cannot deny the fact that the city and its modern architecture is visually some of the best Singapore has to offer. You know when you look at a scene and it evokes a sense of ore that is it worth photographing. So I have decided to dedicate a series of images to the cityscape of Singapore, in between exploring nature of course.

This album is very different from all the others that I have posted because I had to go to Singapore for two nights. Whenever I need to make the voyage from eight degrees south to one degree north I prefer to fly first row on my favorite airline Air Asia and since last year I have developed a fondness for the area that I did not know when I lived in Singapore in 1973. Back in those days the best place to go for street food was when after sunset the car park close to the Hyatt on Orchard Road would turn into a hawker center but nowadays it is Geylang Road. Within a stretch of a less than a mile you find the greatest possible variety of Asian cuisine. With its authentic scenery of shop houses and untouched by the modernization that has changed the face of Singapore Geylang easily brings to mind how Singapore must have been a hundred years ago. Quite obviously it is also a red-light district with a hectic day and night life but you see no tourists here, other than group travelers from Taiwan or the PRC. On the second morning of my stay I did go out for a sunrise walk like I do at home and I could not believe my eyes when I saw how busy Geylang Road was at seven in the morning. Some of the restaurants have signs indicating they are open 24 hours a day and even the big clothing store on the corner had either re-opened already or had never closed down during the night. In addition Geylang is obviously home to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of foreign workers. Early in the morning you see small groups of them everywhere, sitting on the curb, waiting for some pick-up truck that will take them to the building site where they are working. I do not think the Singapore Tourism Board is likely to heavily promote Geylang but for those who like to observe local life as I do, Geylang is a fascinating destination and will not disappoint you.
