The dress that no one could agree on is now being used for a cause everyone can get behind. The Salvation Army in South Africa used a photograph of the dress that went viral in February for a campaign against domestic violence.

New Compressor Head: Shining light on arithmetic compression

In episode 5 of Compressor Head, +Colt McAnlis sheds light on the dark mysteries of arithmetic compression. Colt walks us through the process of the algorithm, encoding and decoding using nothing but a low-odor dry-erase marker he found in Google’s garage. Also he has a lava lamp.

After spending six years gazing at the Red Planet’s atmosphere and recording its water signatures, scientists have gathered strong evidence to suggest that not only was early Mars a much wetter world than previously believed, but it also possessed a vast northern ocean covering as much as a fifth of its surface.

Wait, how can you bundle crapware with crapware?
The newest version of Java for Mac has joined the list of apps that come bundled with crapware, in this case, an Ask.com toolbar. When you're installing the newest version of Java, you'll be prompted to install the Ask.com toolbar. It's easy to miss during the installation process if you're just clicking "Next," so be vigilant when you're installing it and you'll be safe. [ZDNet]

Popular BitTorrent client uTorrent is causing a stir by bundling crapware that mines for cryptocurrency with idle CPU processing in its latest update. You can opt out when installing--though some users claim they were never asked for permission--and it's easy to accidentally click "okay." Including adware isn't a new tactic, but this is one is particularly slimy. Learn how to remove the software at How-to Geek.

Yay! We all pulled together and won net neutrality! Except we didn't:

Excerpted from +Ars Technica:

"US Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) this week filed legislation she calls the "Internet Freedom Act" to overturn the Federal Communications Commission's new network neutrality rules."

"These rules 'shall have no force or effect, and the Commission may not reissue such rule in substantially the same form, or issue a new rule that is substantially the same as such rule, unless the reissued or new rule is specifically authorized by a law enacted after the date of the enactment of this Act,' the Internet Freedom Act states."

"The legislation has 31 Republican cosponsors."

[...]

"In the latest election cycle, Blackburn received $25,000 from an AT&T political action committee (PAC), $20,000 from a Comcast PAC, $20,000 from a cable industry association PAC, and $15,000 from a Verizon PAC, according to the Center for Responsive Politics."

We continue to have the very best system of government that corporate money can buy ... for themselves.
Internet providers need the freedom to block and throttle Internet traffic.

Yep. Another fight. Let's hope that the network and cable news picks up on this and follow it; exposing those congress people that are trying to push it through. As long as we keep on top of this, it can only serve to make the law makers behind it look bad. The worse that could happen is that we let them push it through while we're all looking the other way or they could attach this kind of language to a bill that has nothing to do with the internet and slip it past us that way.

Story
Introduction
Interested in language, music, mathematics, computer gaming, and programming.

Likes too many things and does not discriminate enough. So snobs may hate me... I would watch both Felini and Adam Sandler. (I know and love many art directors, but would easily relax and watch most simple romantic comedies)

I listen to Americana, Pop, Rock, Classical, Industrial, Alternative, Goth and "Other".

I'm a tinkerer and easily distracted.

I use Linux, Windows and Mac OS X to run my hardware. But my "platform" of choice is Chrome (for now).

I develop iPhone applications, but use Android.

Valet service was strange. Coming in at first I missed the humongous sign stating this. My 2 yr old had a broken arm, so I was pretty rushed. The initial service was terrible. Did not feel like we got "emergency" response. The later hospital part was good however. All staff were very good with her.
