I'm a sucker for exposed brick and ceiling beams, so I really like the interior/ambiance at District - it has a great feel. I had two glasses of wine - one cabernet sauvignon and one riesling. While I know the varietals that I like, I'm awful at picking particular vintages and the menu and waitress at District made it easy. I liked both glasses, though the cabernet sauvignon was better than the riesling (which I expected to be fruitier given the description on the menu). Some reviews mention that game nights are bad nights to go here. I didn't know it was a game night when I ended up here -- but I didn't think it was that bad after about 8. It started off packed (hard to order, hard to find a place to sit) at 7 but by about 8 was still happening but was not as overcrowded. And, Andre who mans the door is great. He greeted me on arrival - was welcoming and chummy in a way that made me remember his name (which I'm usually bad at). As we left, he called out to us saying we couldn't leave without saying goodbye and was again friendly and fun. Then, he even chased us down the street to the corner when I forgot my credit card. That's service! I'd go back just to chum it up with Andre again :)

For Cream of Tomato soup lovers, this place may have *THE* best cream of tomato soup in the world. They call it Creme Andalouse - and it's wonderful! This is a great place to get really good, reasonably priced and reasonably fast food in Midtown. I've made it in and out of La Bonne Soupe in 20 minutes or sometimes lingered for hours. You can really take it at your own pace. For lunch, I recommend just having the soup. For dinner, you can turn the soup into a "Meal" that includes salad and dessert. They also have great quiche, crepes, fondue, and steaks. I eat here a lot and have brought friends, so in aggregate I've tried almost everything on the menu and it's all really good. The staff is always friendly and fast, and the bread and butter on the table is wickedly addictive. I like to dunk it in the soup for what becomes almost a tomato fondue.

Zvart does really nice work. They do quality alterations at reasonable prices and can turn them around as quickly or slowly as you need them to. I found Zvart when I was in college. I had bought a really expensive dress I couldn't wait to wear to a formal. I tried it on the night before and the zipper broke. I was sure there was nothing I could do -- it was a hidden zipper which can be hard to replace, plus I needed it for 4 p.m. the next day. I showed up at Zvart as soon as they opened (10 a.m.) the next morning. The place was a buzz with people trying on dresses and picking things up, and I thought there was no chance of getting it done that day. They took it, committed to it, had it done by 4 p.m., and only charged me $20!! They completely saved me and I've been a loyal customer ever since. I've probably brought about 100 items to have altered or repaired over the past few years and they've always done a great job. They even do complicated work like reweaving. I tore the knee of my favorite pants in a way I was sure there was no saving them. They took two weeks to do it, but they rewove them and they are perfect -- you'd never know anything happened. The other nice thing about this location is that they are just two doors down from Town & Country Cleaners, so you can bring things over to be drycleaned easily before or after alteration.

I went here in August with a group of 10 girlfriends. We're all foodies and make a point about once a month to try a restaurant no one has been to, so Incanto was August. The menu is ridiculously pretentious and obscure. There were at least 4 items that no one at the table recognized. Cockscombs? It turns out they are the "comb" on the top of a rooster's head. In a salad? Yuck. Sometimes exotic is fun -- this stuff is weird just for the sake of being weird. In the case of all of these weird ingredients, there were just trace amounts used so it was clear the ingredients were just there so the restaurant could say they used these "exotic" ingredients. Then, the food wasn't even good. We ordered almost everything on the menu - appetizers and entrees - about 20 different things and shared. Some of it was OK, but no one was happy. Maybe the good cooking staff was on vacation (it was a friday in August), but it was just inexcusably bad. This restaurant was a terrible disappointment - we had heard such good things! And, worse yet, it was also pricey for the quality and portion size. I will not go back and would discourage others from even trying it.

Zibibbo is a solid choice in Palo Alto. They have a good atmosphere, decent food made from good seasonal ingredients, and the restaurant is large enough that they almost always have availability. It's not a standout by any means, but it also won't disappoint. I've eaten a lot of different things here, but I'd particular recommend the Albondigas (meatballs) on the Antipasti menu, the Israeli Cigars appetizer (potato and chives wrapped in phyllo dough and fried), the pastas and the Salmon. They also have few red meat specials (Prime RIb, Ribeye) on different nights that are also really good. The pizzas aren't anything special. The bar here is a good place to chill out after work - they make a good cosmo.

I haven't bought art here, but I have had them frame a few pieces. They do some of the nicest framing work in Palo Alto. I just got a painting framed here. They had a lot of nice options and were really flexible in showing me a wide variety of possible frames that could work with the painting. When it was finished because it was a large piece (48"x48") they delivered it and even hung it up! Then, since I just moved, they realized I had other artwork that wasn't hung and they asked if I wanted help with that. They were nice enough to help me hang up all of the art in my house! The only reason this isn't 5 stars is because they aren't terribly fast (framing took 4-5 weeks) and they are a little flaky (they take a long summer vacation and close up shop for a month or so in the summer). If you're not impatient and you want a quality framing job, I'd highly recommend them.

If you want good ceviche, this is a great place to go! They have at least 8 different types of ceviche. You can have a sampler plate and try 4 different kinds. All 4 I tried were great, and honestly I'm not sure you can go wrong with any of the choices. The cooked fish entrees are also good - I had the Mahi Mahi, which had a tropical sweet vanilla sauce, and it was delicious! The whole menu seemed strong, but the reason to go here is for the ceviche so if you need to get your Peruvian fix, Fresca won't disappoint.

I am shocked to learn that Yahoo continues to profit from the bloody slaughter of elephants, helping push them towards extinction.
100 elephants are killed for ivory every day -- these gentle giants could be extinct in the wild in few decades unless we stop the slaughter.
As a top leader in the tech industry, I call on you to take a bold stand and urgently end your complicity to this cruel trade.

I so love Daniel Humm's cooking and approach to food. I really miss his early days when he used to cook in San Francisco. Huge Congrats to Daniel for his James Beard award - well-deserved!
