Big Data and the Future of Work

A while ago I was asked to take part in an event where I was asked to share why I believed that big data, and specifically analytics, would lay the foundation for the Future of Work; and I had to do this in 5 minutes and for an audience of humanists. Now…

Social Capital vs. Intellectual Capital -- what's more valuable?

This may seem like a ridiculous question to ask, but its one that has been increasingly top-of-mind over the last few weeks as I’ve been talking with a broad cross-section of folks interested in Expertise. We are all familiar with the saying “It’s not…

In God we trust. All others must bring data.

I chose to start with W. Edwards Deming’s famous quote since this post is all about Data; why we need it and why we don’t have enough of it, which may seem surprising since all anyone talks about these days is the bigdata we are swimming in. However there…

From a young age I’ve loved interacting with people; sharing ideas, challenging opinions, getting or giving help, and generally being a bit of a “yapper” to quote my parents. My teachers found me disruptive and I have to sympathize with them because I was…

It's all kicking off at SMiLE London 2015, March

In a few weeks time I’ll be in London at Simply Communicate’s SMiLE London 2015 exchanging ideas around social, collaboration, communications, with a lot of analytics thrown in for good measure. It’s my second time presenting at a SMiLE event and its…

Introduction

A lover of technology with a fascination for all things analytics with particular interest in the role of analytics in transforming how we live & work.

I've spent the last decade building analytics technology at IBM with a focus on workforce analytics. I started by leading IBM LanguageWare from small research project into enterprise technology that underpins dozens of IBM products, including IBM Watson of Jeopardy fame.

I then spent some time working on pan-European research project, Nepomuk, blending social, semantics, and analytics to create a smarter desktop. I was then Content Analytics Strategist before becoming Social Analytics Strategist for IBM Social Business. Throughout my time at IBM I've also been Subject Matter Expert to IBM Global Business Services advising IBM clients on potential application and business benefits of Analytics and more recently Social Business, working across geographies and industries.

Today I would like to think that I am a globally recognized thought leader in social analytics with an active social media presence and popular blog, allthingsanalytics.com. Prior to joining IBM I held a number of leadership positions across Motorola, Informix and Oracle. I also sit on advisory boards for the Digital Repository of Ireland at the Royal Irish Academy, and the Digital Arts & Humanities PhD Program at Trinity College Dublin.
