Dear Guildies,

Please consider voting for my SxSWEdu panel picker idea: The Three Reasons Your Education Innovation Won't Work. Mike Gielniak of the One to One Institute and I have found that education innovations fail for some very counterintuitive reasons having to do with how people are motivated, how people learn, and how systems work. We will talk about these breakdowns and the counterintuitive solutions in this panel: http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/62424
Education innovations fail for three reasons: - First Failure: Misunderstanding Human Motivation - Second Failure: Misunderstanding Human Learning - Third Failure: Misunderstanding Human Systems Participants will examine the linear thinking behind the litany of school reform strategies that have shown little or no improvement in student outcomes, and will outline a new way forward that is scalable, and will dramatically improve learning over tim...

HELP WANTED: Inevitable Data

I've created this game/tool that I use with groups of education folk or parents or whoever to rank student outcomes. I would love to seed this new version of the tool with some data.  If you have time, please go to: http://cards.studentoutcomes.org/

YOUR LOGIN ID IS: 2SVFEKU0IO

- Drag the cards to rank order the student outcomes they represent.
- Then hit SUBMIT on the bottom.
- That's it

Feel free to also suggest new cards, if you like ;-)
Welcome to the Student Outcome Card Sorter! This tool provides educators, parents, and administrators a process for comparing and discussing the priority of student outcomes in their school or district: First get a group code and provide that code to all team members participating in the outcome ...

Yes, exactly.  There is deliberately lots of overlap in order to include all the different words that are important to different constituencies. Hopefully one result of the discussion is what the group considers to be fundamental - I have my own favorite candidates for that.  Hopefully most do.  Hopefully it is possible to put together a list of 4 or 5 that are comprehensive...

BETA TESTERS NEEDED!!

Hey everyone.  So it's not really a game - more like an activity, but I am looking for folks to beta test my student outcome cards site.  The idea is to sort cards in the order of their importance to you, personally, and then see the report on what everyone in your group thinks.  Its the kind of thing that you might use in a PLC or district meeting to clarify priorities. Should also collect some interesting (anonymous, not anonomized) data.

Here is the link: http://cards.studentoutcomes.org/

I have 2 requests:
1) Do the cards once, with your honest opinion.  For this use group code: Y2E5WXDKF9
2) Try to break the code - send descriptions of what broke as well as screenshots as possible to me, or post here. For this use group code: L7WNM6I0G8, or get your own group code(s) as part of the testing.
3) Let me know any overall problems, like the instructions weren't clear or it would work better if... etc.

Many thanks!
-Marie

New Hechinger report: playing video games 5+ hours beneficial for children
This is the kind of research every kid trying to convince his parents to let him play video games dreams about: “Time spent playing video games may have positive effects on young children.” That was the headline on a March 2016 press release from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, promoting a new study co-authored by …

Hm... at least in this case I would suspect people are under-reporting rather than over-reporting their time spent gaming.

My daughter spends hours in front of a screen. Should I feel guilty or proud? I just posted about this in Getting Smart.
By Marie Bjerede - Is hours of screen time, wasting? Or moments of motivation?
