watch me drawing September 5th - 10th Berlin Hall 13 / 113

I'm very proud to announce my presence at the IFA Berlin 2014. I'm joining adonit for 5 day's as artist and i'd like to ask you to give me a hint if you are there or just come over for a chat or just watch me drawing.

for me it is a win win situation. I'm a proud user of the jot touch technology and i do not need any advice to be happy with adonit products. As long you stay behind a product it is much more fun to present and be visible in the public. Good moment for me :)

i will use the Pen i'm using for all the drawings www.adonit.net/jot/touch

i would love to meet you!

I'm was sick for a couple of day's and i was asking myself why i'm sometimes emotional. I believe an emotional reaction is always about feeling. maybe danger or the need to protect yourself. So why? and i already posted this story http://goo.gl/gBqQfT on g+ but id like to add: things like this happend all the time. Its nothing special. And because it does its not possible to relax a bit as Woman in Tech.

there are reasons why we act very busy and why there is no space for Friendliness because it will be all the time misunderstood. And if this happens the consequences are always not funny and sometimes very scary. The story about the client who showed up and liked me so much because i just listened is maybe just a story about a lonely man. I can understand that. But it is also the story about a young girl who can't be just professional.

iconography can be so much fun and a well shaped icon is so important. For me its one of the most important quality indicators. Am i wrong? My Simson Project will get two beautiful icons :)

Google is giving their designers a voice. Show you how we think and how we try to influence users to get things right. Thank you Google for starting a new chapter in your companies strategy being visible. I like it.

design translation works in more than one direction. the point is. Even if you already have a concept. a good one. in this case a tab driven & dropdown logic. (android)

i can't just bring tabs (existing on iOS) & dropdowns to iOS. i need to think about iOS learned ideas & UX. lucky me my options for morphing & colors are way better. so i moved the tab bar (time presets) into a swipe aka hamburger menu (there could be a quick gesture to change the preset.) and i killed the dropdown with a very fancy scroll down concept.

this is how you should work on platforms. :)

ps: the heart / measument for heartbeats is just as example in one screen. the layout should work without a heartbeat too. more on tumblr:

Minigame Jams are fun, ours was a success.

Wanna play MEOW? i joined the Berlin Mini Game jam and i didn't expect a team like this. We had two amazing Developers and an unbelievable talented sound designer and at least a lot of cat pictures fresh from my hard drive. We came up with a multiplayer apk. Ready to play in just 8 hours. Feel free to try this out with your kids. (Bugs are for free) Download APK (with bugs) goo.gl/FRHwYu

Credits and big thanks to you guys. Thank you to the Berlin Minigame Jam organizers and Gameduell (hosting)

For the last two Weeks i was working close with www.openresearch.com a mobile app company based in Vienna, Austria. We are working together for the Astrian Carclub called ÖAMTC. i made tonns of icons and new icons sets, new little ideas, improvements, cleaned the concept and designed everything. At all it was a big project and i'm glad i did it.

keep in touch the launch will be in June. If you are looking for an app company which is delivering on time, this one could work for you

like to know my daily rate? read this.

About Daily Rates. Okay this is a very sensitive topic. in each town you have a different rate for different kind of professionals. now i will expose my rate and how i calculate it.

Berlin is a town where you can have a 70 sqm flat for 500 € + 300 for internet, power and you need for living maybe 500 €. Food and Restaurants aren't that much expensive. Berlin is a big town and lots of people join us.

a graphicdesigner earns 300 maybe 400 € as freelancer here. This is was most German startups would pay. Some of them hiring super freaky guy's from london for 900 € per day which is normal because london is way more expensive.

so, i put myself in the middle, i earn 550 € per day in my homeoffice and my german clients think i'm expensive per day. i am. but i'm not expensive compared to my international colleagues and this is important for my pitch because instead of 10 day's as 300 € designer i work 5 day's and i'm good and fast and i deliver a lot of service for my client. if a designer with a 1200 € daily rate is delivering wrong imagine how much another day cost.

i listen to my client, i do research (i start using things weeks before) and i spend time with my clients. this is why i grab 200 € more than my colleagues. i know designer whith higher rates which aren't good as me. those are a perfect fit for big contracts and jobs because you can use them very easy and you can terrify them. i don't have that much respect for those guy's.

so why i'm cheaper? because of honesty and my clients. if i would be too expensive i would work for crappy projects which are insane or financed by advertising budgets. i could do that but this isn't what i want. If i would be too cheap i had the experience clients don't value my work and miss my invoice.

this is why i came up with the setup 550 and 650 € Inhouse + travel expanses.

turns out i have 1 week in a month for projects and acquiring new clients. don't make the mistake and stop doing it. if you stop or don't have time you will have money but no future. 1 week is for my existing clients. i take care of them. they can call me i'm here this is my service they trust me i have always a little bit time for my clients. And 2 weeks is for my projects, earning money. in those two weeks i do not work every day but i deliever all the services, research, concept what ever it takes to fit into the Project.

550 € / day is a very fair rate for a senior designer with my skill setup.
after taxes and health insurance and a fee for social insurance and something for if i'm old...i have more or less what i need to live in my little paradise in the middle of Berlin. And i protect myself from advertising business or clients who don't care about my invoice. Its a balance i found which is less about my skill and more about peace for myself.

sometimes i wish i would be cheaper and stay for more than 2 weeks with a projects but this is a job for employed designers and if i wan't this i should join a company. My tax lawyer said i'm good i earn more money than my design colleagues in berlin. i could earn more if i would sell my soul and i did it once i think i wouldn't survive a second try.

i used this in a meeting last week and i will use it again. My picture of screwing apps with design.

Kill your app with brand styleguides is very common and i explain for my clients why we shouldnt do this. Brands developing apps because its our modern pen. Remember the pens you give away? Its swag. Useful, you keep it and your brand is placed.

They like to do the same with apps and sometimes the brand is so massively important they change anything...lets say...to yellow. The logos have to be so big and the typography should be a special one.

A yellow pen is fine, but if the ink is yellow the pen isnt any longer useful for writing. And this is what happens if you screw a mobile app with brand style guides. Your swag has now yellow ink and is useless.

Its all about the good balance and sometimes is branding a menu absolut enough. Some very decent color touches and few well placed concepts about partnership are working like wonder.
If your customer is using the app or pen a lot your brand is more visible.
