I am really HYPED. Just flew my Magic Carpet of Books into an east coast school—via SKYPE. These kids were enthusiastic, and SO smart. One smarty-pants asked me if dinosaurs were in Australia when it split from Gondwana! I had to look it up and then email the answer to the class. The class had gone through my “Down Under Fun” web page, and read about the critters in ALL my books. And when they opened the box of my books on the teacher’s desk, they were ecstatic—jumping and shouting! Times like this are what writing is all about—the ability to thrill kids and HOOK them on reading. Of course an eager and cooperative teacher is vital—and Mary-Catherine is awesome!

+Margot Finke What kind of freakneck do you suppose Donald Trump is related to? I read just a touch on a Australian Jungle in "Walkabout" I don't hear much about, seems pretty interesting.

WOW! Just looked over the interview that award winning Aussie writer and blogger, Clancy Tucker, put on his Blog about ME.  His books have a true-blue, fairdinkum Aussie flavor, and they have also won many awards.  Do check out his amazing BLOG—plus his interview of me.

EDITING CLUES:
A CONTENT EDITOR is like a Deep Sea Diver. They plunge deep into your PLOT, your CHARACTERS, and your STORY ARC.  Weaknesses can scuttle, but they CAN’T HIDE!  A “Content” Edit soon flushes them out, and recommends ways to strengthen, empower, and tighten.

READERS LOVE CHAPTERS that DELIVER it ALL.

REVIEW + Sample Chapters
Daisy and Bartholomew Q,” by Margot Finke, is an amazing and magical journey to Word World, where nothing is as it seems. Daisy and Bartholomew Q. Bookworm find themselves amongst some of the most amusing and unusual creatures: such as the Dynoroar, Oogledork, Featherbutt bird, and the Lord High Bookworm, to name a few. They race against time to help Daisy finish her garden essay by the morning. Procrastination, and her reluctance to use a thesaurus, is the problem. But is Daisy is ready for the adventure of a lifetime?

Margot Finke is a word master. She uses her lyrical writing style and ingenious imagination to weave a  marvelous story that tweens will enjoy for a long time. This is a goldmine of a book for teachers as well, as students are introduced to the power of words through the online resource that is provided in the Kindle version. Just click on the highlighted word, and the New Oxford American Dictionary definition pops up. What better way to introduce the magnificent world of vocabulary to students? This teacher highly recommends “Daisy and Bartholomew Q,” one of Margot’s many wonderful books. I look forward to sharing it with my students this year!

Victor, I would have loved to put color illos inside "Daisy," but because color inside, for books over 40 pages, makes publishing charges sky high, I had to go with black and white. The Kindle version does have color inside--only paper has the increased charge for color.

EDITING CLUES:
A CASE of the REPEATS.
ANTACID won’t stop this kind of “REPEATS.”
If you repeat the same words, over-and-over on every page, it is a BAD HABIT that has only one sure FIX—
FIND and REPLACE. This little miracle worker (found at the top right of your Word document) will instantly replace those DULL, OVERUSED words with powerful and active ones. Your THESAURUS is a excellent place to find replacements that BOOST your writing.

It's funny but I was watching a TV show, The Great American Dream Machine from the early 70's & they were using different words to describe the same size Olives. They meant to confuse the public calling the same Olives, 'large', 'jumbo', 'giant', 'huge' but no small or medium. You see this tactic when buying a fountain soda.
I try to vary my words but sometimes I get the hick-ups.

EDITING CLUES:
EDITING is NOT for WIMPS—it takes SKILL and knowledge of the genre. FRESH EYES do it best. The writer is too close to the nuts and bolts of it. Self-publishing authors particularly benefit from a final professional edit. Expensive? Yes. But it will be the BEST INVESTMENT you ever made.

Clancy, you did me proud, mate.  Not surprised you know Jeanne Rogers. I wrote a blurb for the back cover of her last book. I also love the way she takes the Australian animals and weaves them into awesome tales and adventures.  Every kid should read her books.  Thanks again for the opportunity to appear in your Blog.

EDITING CLUES:
Think of GRAMMAR and PUNCTUATION as writing TRAFFIC CONTROLS. They show your readers when to pause, when to stop, and how to interpret your paragraphs. Writers must know WHEN, WHERE, and HOW to put both these elements into play. Without these BASIC WRITING CONTROLS your readers flounder. Your plot and characters drift—a perplexing MESS!
MASTER the BASICS!

Reminds me of a Texas A&M joke. What goes "screech, vroom, screech, vroom, screech vroom"? Give up, an Aggie trying to go through a flashing red traffic light.

WRITING CLUES:
WAFFLES are delicious—but only hot, on a plate, and drenched in maple syrup. In a story, WAFFLING ON makes your readers YAWN and skip the page.
**WAFFLING happens when you are carried away by your own words—a description we can’t let go of, or a scene that goes on, and on, and on.
**Knowing WHEN to QUIT, WHY to QUIT, and HOW to QUIT, is a talent that comes with experience—or a timely nudge from your critique group buddies.
GIVE WRITING WAFFLES THE BOOT!

WRITING CLUES:
The right ADJECTIVE adds a SPARKLE and a BOOST to your paragraphs and pages. They help you write scenes and characters that stick in reader’s minds. Dull, overused adjectives do not paint great mental pictures—so your book is forgotten, FAST! Or, worse yet, never read to THE END. YIKES! So, round up those awesome, amazing or appealing adjectives, and HERD them onto your pages. Make them work for YOU!
