Grut bier. This was from last night but so interesting I'm still musing over it. It's meant to be a 13th century recipe and it was definitely like nothing modern I've tasted -- like barely sweet lemonade at first, then an herby flavor (rosemary and ginger among others) with a bitter aftertaste. Though I don't expect to drink it regularly, I kinda liked it. Of course, I have almost no sweet tooth. The initial flavor reminded me of a lemon-ginger soda I make if I don't add enough sugar. Thinking historically, I bet this would have been a good complement to a meaty, starchy diet.
